Window tinting

Hey guys,

Why is it that I rarely see any window tinting done on ay 911's? I always thought higher end cars had that. Kinda new to the whole Porsche thing still, and just asking around.
I'd like to get my silver 88 Carrera tinted. How bout posting some pics of
911's with tints for us all to get an idea.

Also, thanks to everyone who has sent in a reply to my posts. Since I'm still new at this and am absorbing everything like a sponge, it has been very helpful!

FastCarFan 04-04-2008 08:16 AM

I have mixed feelings about tinted windows. I definitely do not like the super-dark tints. Having said that, a PO of my '88 Carrera tinted the windows, & I have not had it removed. It is not too dark for my tastes.

Here is a photo for your reference.

Ok thanks! That gives me somewhat of an idea.
Anyone with dark tints out there wanna lay down your pics?

diverdan 04-04-2008 08:42 AM

Yeah, high end posers. Window tinting is for posers, not serious drivers. Seriously... visibility is severely hampered and seeing all around is primo for safety especially when you push the envelope.

Or to hide your rollbar and 6 point belts which aren't technically legal on the street:)

twait01 04-04-2008 09:04 AM

I 'm not big on the look of dark tint or how much it reduces your visibility, but the reduction in cabin temps is nice. Wish there was a product that could reduce the UV radiation with out the loss in visibility, especially at night.

TWork 04-04-2008 09:09 AM

I have tinted the windows in most of my cars -- including my '79 SC. Due to the angle of the rear window, it made visibility pretty poor. Worse than other cars I've done. I would not do it again on the 911.

Mine before I took the tint out.

The first car I ever had with tint, I always wear sunglasses during the day anyways and it was really too dark at night.

Tinted windows are too pimptastic for my taste.

carreraken 04-04-2008 09:23 AM

I had my rear tinted on my 85 targa to keep the hot CA sun & heat out. The AC takes forever to cool once the black interior gets heat soaked...

diverdan 04-04-2008 09:26 AM

No one lives in a more sunshine soaked area than I do with summer temps regularly going over 120 degrees F. The relief provided by tinted windows is very significant and it even saves the interiors, but I stand on the safety issue as a past tinter, rider in tinted cars, and several times near victim of "blind" drivers. I get tempted each summer to do the rear windows of the 951 and 928. The best solution that I found was leaving a clear area across the rear window perhaps 12 inches high. Admitantly, I have tinted the rear non opening windows of the 951 and had done so previously on the 928, but I need to have clear visibility out the sides, and through all the mirrors to feel safe in traffic. "Looking cool" because of the tint is still for posers!

...And in the city it's a pity cause we just can't hide,

Tinted windows don't mean nothin', they know who's inside....

dshepp806 04-04-2008 11:45 AM

No way would I tint my 911's windows,..the tradeoff with coolness (environmental)? uh'uh. I'd modify the damned AC first...need as much light getting in so that I can see as much as possible going 140MPH......

...to each his own.,

Best,

Crap! I guess I am too! But it sure does help here in Florida... :)

Porsche_911s 04-04-2008 12:43 PM

Did not do it in my coupe and then it was the FIRST thing I did with the Targa. In Houston, you do what you can to fight the heat.

gerrygug 04-04-2008 01:05 PM

California Highway Patrol will write you up for tinted windows as they are prohibited by State law. The CHP consider it a safety issue for you (visibility) and them (when they approach the car they want a clear view of who is in the vehicle). The officer who stopped my wife said he approaches cars with tinted windows with his hand on his gun. It is sad that these officers have to fear for their lives and I can understand why they want a clear view of the vehicle occupants.

Mine it perfectly legal in Florida

mkaraoglan 04-04-2008 01:30 PM

i had mine tinted in Van Nuys and i had 3 different guys come back into the waiting area to make sure i *really* wanted the lightest tint possible.
I only got the tinting to reduce heat into the cabin. i was getting scorched on the 5 commuting to work. I use less AC now and it's very subtle. Supposedly it reduced heat by 45%...fyiw

For anyone else who is thinking about ti. i kind of got PO'd because they were jjust spraying the soapy water solution all over the place and it was dripping down the doors, rear panels etc...

While the law exists, it's total BS. Most new SUV's come with such dark windows stock off the showroom floor that you can't see the car ahead of the SUV. I hate it.

The Carrera I bought came with tinted windows on a black painted car. I wouldn't have done this myself, but I live with it. It's really a bit bling, if you ask me, but you didn't. ;)

tmsautoart 04-04-2008 08:03 PM

Not sure why having tinted windows makes you a "poser"... but I guess I am a total "poser" bigtime! All my cars have tint. Florida is absolutely full of us tinted window posers. Never really had a problem seeing...super human eyesight perhaps? Dave...maybe thats why your "Super Dave" Well...with the exception of the white GTi...its REALLY dark.

Keep it real posers with tinted windows! WERD!!!!!!!!!!!

If I was a cop and pulled a car over with dark tinted windows I'd come up to the car with my weapon drawn. Thats being said... MIK911, your car with the window tinted looks sharp as hell.

thats why they have tint laws here in Fl that only allow a certain percentage of tint. Trust me...I know. At night w/ a cop shining his spotlight on the back of a legally tinted car...you can see right through it. And if your any kind of respectable law abiding person...you roll down your window when a cop pulls you over.
Just watch an episode of cops.............see it all the time. SmileWavy

Thanks for the compliment. As a low abiding citizen, I do roll down all windows when pulled over by a cop (rare).

Where you live its probably optional but futher South its mandatory, especially on the Targa models. I tinted mine and it dropped the temps inside on a hot afternoon by 20 degrees.

One issue is not to get the windows tinted too dark. Looks nice but is a bear to drive at night.

eR1c 04-05-2008 09:30 PM

My '77 930 came stock w/ a slight tint to the windows. It's not a film, looks like it was just a darker glass that was used. It's very subtle, but it's definitely not clear.

johncarlos2003 04-06-2008 02:41 AM

Not legal but i love it. wayyyyy cooler inside and i think way cooler outside too. looking that is . . . to each his/her own.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1207478485.jpg

3.2 CAB 04-06-2008 04:44 AM

I doubt that I will ever have my windows tinted in my 911. It sort of defeats the purpose of it being a Cab. Now, my BMW 750iL, V12, that is a different story, it is tinted, and it looks great! It goes great with the Sterling Silver paint code it is wearing.

DRACO A5OG 04-06-2008 04:55 AM

Back and Rear Quarter are Legal, it is the driver, passanger, front quarters and windshield that is illegal to tint.

Just FYI, trying to be a gangsta by rolling your tinted windows half way down or cracked is a great invite for traffic police to pull you over especialy the moto cops. Ask me how I know :D

A Doctor's note won't help, because there are clear tints that keep out the UV's so you can't tell the Police you have a note for Limo Tint on front windows.

PO limoed rear and 50% on the sides. Need to re-fresh them.

flatsixnut 04-06-2008 05:50 AM

I like mine dark. It also helps here in Florida...but it does not really matter because when I drive both of the windows are always down. (except when the wife is in the car).

Can we revive this one? I need to tint my wife's Mini. Who has DIY'ed this and what's the best source for the kit? It's scorching hot in AZ.

GH85Carrera 06-23-2008 10:35 AM

The PO of my car had the windows tinted. It is not real dark but it helps a LOT to keep the heat out. I really do not notice a reduction is visibility at night.

If you wear your hat backward, you're a gangster.

If you wear your pants down around your crack so I can see your boxers, you're a gangster.

If you take the muffler off your Harley or Honda-Civic, you're a gangster.

If you tint the windows of you car, you're a gangster.

If you are not a real gangster, and you do one or more of the above, then you are just a punk want to be gangster.

Or, at least others will assume that you are.

Rick, the cost of tint is relatively in-expensive when compared to the quality that you will want with the finished product....I wouldn't hassle with doing this myself.....I'd rather pay a pro $200 and have a great looking job done.

I have 15% on all my vehicles EXCEPT the 911....it has only the factory hint of tint. :D

M491driver 06-23-2008 11:53 AM

This car was tinted over 20 years ago and held up well until I removed the tinting last spring. Once I hit my mid-50s my night vision was not so good so the tint had to go.

I have been a porsche driver for over 20 years. I have never had tinted windows, and thought that was for Ferrari drivers and Corvettes.

But last year I went to help one of my buddies who was helping out with a Subaru WRX. Anyway, we were futzing around and another one of his friends stops buy with a 996s that he just bought and had the windows tinted. I was admiring the car and he says the window tint cost him only $100 and they did not have to remove the windows. I looked through the tint from the inside of the car, and whaddaya know, it does NOT obstruct your vision or look too dark.

I agree with Milt. My Chevy K5 Blazer came with dark ghetto boy tint from the factory in 1988. So, I went and got my windows tinted for the first time in my entire life.

Why? Because on Saturday we had honest-to-goodness 110F degree heat. It will get hotter yet. It will probably reach 115F next month. Around here in central California EVERYONE has tinted windows. If I get a ticket, so be it. I'll take the tint off, get the ticket addressed, and then put the tint back on. It is not for the looks, it is for the fact that I am tired of getting blasted by the sun and dealing with the heat. I also stopped caring if people think I'm a wanna be ghetto poser.
