Need help with AC Repair
I have a 86 targa that the AC died. The clutch on the compressor looks like it's toast. The outer pully is nearly melted. I'm guessing that the compressor ran out of oil and siezed.
Any way, I want to replace it with the same Nippondenso compressor. Given that R12 is hard to get in the US, can this compressor run on R134? Will I need to completely upgrade the holes, dryer, etc to run R134? Any help is appreciated.

The nippondenso compressor can be converted to 134a. Get a rebuilt one or a new Sanden and consider adding an addl condenser if going with 134a for better performance. Barrier hoses are a MUST.

The Nip-denso will work with 134A but it means completely flushing the system first. I just replaced a one year old Denso that was already leaking with a Sanden.
You should really consider replacing your hoses with Barrier hose. Also, while you are in there, get an in-line high/low pressure switch that will shut off the compressor if the pressure gets outside of normal range. Do a search, there is a ton of info already posted.
