Odd door handle problem.

Car is a 74 911. To open the door I must squeeze against the handle as tight as I can...it sometimes takes two fingers on the inside to get the latch to release. On my other 911, the latch releases the door when it is maybe 1/4" away from the handle...much much easier to use. Is there a shim somewhere? An adjustment of any kind that might deal with this?

the usual culprit is a broken trigger, where it pivots on it's pin.

Thanks John. Is it repairable? I assume the fix is pretty obvious once the handle is out?

I have the same problem (squeeze really hard)...but one day I was goofing around and turned the latch back to closed and now only the inner handle works..

so I'm also wondering how to fix this and whether I need to replace the entire outer handle...

another possibility is the latch mechanism is simply worn out. check the screws that hold it tight in the door also. a used handle can provide a trigger. not sold separately, although someone on the board recently posted about making some.

The pivot for the trigger wears out, and becomes oval. that is why you have to make the trigger travel farther than normal before the door mechanism opens.

Eventually the trigger pivot hole wears through and breaks. At that point you can either have the old one welded up and re-drilled, or buy a new/used door handle. The problem with buying used is that they changed the style of door handle sometime between 1974 and 1989. The triggers are not compatible before or after the change, so there is a chance that you will buy a used handle that you can't use.

I can't make a recommendation since it seems all the good options require calling and getting lucky with used parts guys.
