G-50 Syncros/Rebuild

Hello, This is a question to all who may have info on installing new Syncros in a 1989 Carrera G-50. The car has 148k on the clock and I have owned the car for 2 years now and I am a newbie to the P-car world and Pelican Parts Forum and loving it. Any help from the broad knowledge base here would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Three guys on the forums that I know have done G50 service are cstreit, dean, and Matt Monson. All good guys.

BTW, might want to post a picture of your car. Some guys around here give you crap when you're new and don't show off what you've got.

Welcome to the forums. You'll be shocked how helpful/informative these forums are.

since mine will be undergoing a rebuild in the coming year, i have been keeping my ears open for upgrades. the standard 2 g-50 upgrades mentioned in other posts, and installing a super zoomy unobtanium 1-2 synchro and taller 1st and second gears. synchro and taller gears are not cheap but well worth it after driving fire breathing turbo with g-50 with the taller gears around last weekend.

the taller 1-2 is truly wonderful to drive in comparison to oem. really really liked it.

check out patrick motorsports fer further details.

I agree the regearing is a nice thing to do if one is so inclined. Problem is that 1st gear is welded to the mainshaft and that can get pricey to find the gear you want. Only a track-dedicated car is typically looking for this regearing.

That being said, 2nd-5th can definitely use some help. 2nd is a little bit short and 3rd is quite a bit too long IMO. In many corners, my car is laboring in 3rd where 2nd can't be used. 4th is not bad and of course 5th is really intended for highway cruising.

The ratios i've considered for a re-gear in my trans are:

2nd: 2.000:1 or 1.941:1
3rd: 1.474 or 1.450
4th: 1.227 or 1.174
5th: 1.040 or 0.967

check out patrick he really knows his trannys. his builder is pat hughs. great guy and he built our score 1/2 1600 cars tranny BULLETPROOF! and i mean we WAILED ON THAT MUTHA AND NEVER MISSED A BEAT! drive 250 miles as fast as you can go in third gear wailing on it and ONLY shift to 4th when you had a tailwind, a downhill section...........they know their there trannies.

the turbo i drove last weekend is combined track monster/highway cruiser. it was remarkable how nice it was 1-2.

im building mine with one thought in mind...................im 50 years old and I AINT DOING IT AGAIN!

The steel syncros are nice, but exorbitantly expensive,
stock 1 is 12:42 and the 12 is part of the main shaft but the lay shaft gear can be change to 38 or 36
