Hydro Pneumatic Struts

I have a pair of hydro pneumatic struts and would like to take the strut inserts out. I've removed the large cap nut. I've tried turning what looks like a gland nut shown in the picture (with the holes) but it is really hard to turn and doesn't seem to unscrew out. Please help.

Bump. Anyone familiar with how to remove the inserts on these struts?

I'm guessing those holes are for a specific spanner wrench.
if you you're feeling lucky, you can try a 3-day soak with pb blaster or kroil, then try it with a plumbers pipe wrench, (just with a purchase/grip on the cap portion) - another guess -
