Help needed on 1977 911S

Picked up a 77 911 not running missing some ign parts. I have a 3 pin perma tune and bought a new perma tune coil (had no coil). Installed new points and want to set the dwell. I am confused on how to hook up my dwell meter to do this! Pleas advise!

I may be able to get a diagram for you later today. In the meantime here's a bump for you so someone else may be able to help sooner.

John,
Per Waynes book "101 Projects for your Porsche 911".
"hook the signal wire of the dwell meter directly to the points wire that is coming off the distributor. In some cases it may be easier to attach the dwell meter to a long screwdriver and place the tip of the screwdriver on the contacts where the wire is plugged into the distributor."

good luck

I have always used the distributor side of the coil and ground. Works for me. Best.

Thanks I have the book, but I don't understand the hookup. I hook up meter black to ground and red to wire at dist. using a screwdriver from dist to wire so I can clamp on to that, Is that correct?

I never figured it out, which is why I now have a Pertronix Ignitor kit in it.

That is pretty much it.

Be aware that the points for a CDI system are just to switch the CDI Box on and off. As long as they are switching, the amount of thime closed vs open does not really matter much.

You can use a feeler gauge to set the points gap and, usually, you will be close enough.

To use a feeler gauge, bump the engine until you get the points open (rubbing block on a high point of the distributor lobe). Loosen the adjusting screw and slip your feeler gauge between the points. Without forcing the points block, move it until the point close on the feeler gauge. Tighten the screw. Be sure to put a dab of distributor grease on the lobe to help the points last longer. If you did this correctly, you are good to go.

Also, check your timing at 6000 rpm.

New problem! No spark, possibly the Prematune is bad, not letting power to the dist. so i would get a reading on dwell meter. Also, ordered a Bosch CDI.

John,

You can check for this. Do a search for "telegraph test" and user "early_s_man". He outlines a procedure to allow you to determine if the CDI is bad.

FWIW, Permatune do not make any noises. This check is only good for the Bosch CDI's.

Just to be sure. Did you check the middle teminal on the harness to the Permatune to verify that you had power (12v) when the key is in the run position?

Hi John, you should also check that the points are giving the CDI a good signal by attaching an ohmmeter to Pin C of the connector and crank the engine to see the circuit make and break.

From the Permatune Site:

A = + or 15, coil hot primary terminal ( - or 1, coil ground primary terminal is connected to the engine ground).

B = Power from ignition switch.

C = Distributor breaker points.

D = Ground

John,

To set the dwell (using a meter) the car has to be running.

I'm not clear on whether you got yours running.

If not, you need to set the initial point gap - then get it going - then test the dwell to bring it within spec's. The larger the gap, the lesser the dwell.

Hope this helps.
