CIS fuel pump problem?

I might have named this thread wrong

I took my 82 SC to the local friendly beetle guy and he mentioned that maybe my fuel injection pump is going.

Ok, that's what he said basically in Japanese

So, of course I head here and do some searches but I'm not sure if I'm heading in the right direction.

I found this thread on a rebuild for the CIS fuel distributer. Seems to be what he is talking about.
CIS fuel distributer rebuild

My buddy mentioned that my left bank seems to running fine since the plugs were coming up dry and white. While the right bank plugs are all fouled.

My 9' is running like crap at all rpms and power is embarassingly bad. You know how the roads are and putting along like some 1.2liter pocket car is just wrong for a Pcar image. (No, I am not a street racer but a few short pumps here and there is enough )

So guys ... am I hosed?
$1500 for a rebuilt fuel distributer is almost the price I payed for the car.
$400 is bad enough ...

What are the options for one that is used?

Thanks all

Just a friendly advice.......

Carsten,

Before you go and buy a replacement FD, check the following:
1). Pull out all six (6) injectors and inspect the spray pattern/s. If you could measure the individual flow rates by collecting the fuel in glass containers the better. This will give you an idea if there is flow discrepancy in the system.
2). A used replacement FD (fuel distributor) is about $100 to $200. What is your system pressure now? Good luck.

I would not have anyone work on a CIS injection system that did not fully understand how it worked. In some cases you are better off trying to work on it yourself with help from this board. First start with the advice from Tony, and work from there. It does not make sense that one entire bank is rich while the other is ok. Check your fuel pressure and control pressure and also inspect for any vacuum leaks. Once you have checked the basics then you have to go into more detailed diagnosis.

BTW, when you are checking the flow on the injectors do not worry about the spray pattern just yet. As long as they are flowing the same I would not replace them at this time.

Thanks guys!

the difference in plug fouling on the left and right banks is what got me thinking that something else is happening too.

I'm gonna try to do a check later this month. Things are busy at the moment.
