Help!!! A while back I ordered 4 seatback release cables from my local Porsche dealer (Niello) and set up an appointment with an upholsterer to have them installed. Well with one seat torn apart to install we found out they were the wrong cables. Put the seat back together and took them back to Niello. Come to find out there are two different types of cables. One for regular seats and another set for the sport seats which I have. One cable is a short one and the other is a longer one. Well they (Niello) informed me they can get the "short" cable but the long one is no longer available. I called Porsche Cars North America in Atlanta to see if they could help me. They referred me to Stoddards. Got the same answer from Stoddards as I did from Niello's. "We can get you the short one but the long one is no longer available"! Does anybody have any suggestions as to where I might be able to get the longer cable? Or any suggestions as to who might be able to fabricate a pair of the longer ones for me? The cables are a shielded type much like the type of cable found on a bicycle. If they were just simpe cables I could pick some up at a bicycle shop but they have a unique "Z" bend attachment swaged on at the end where they attach to the release mechanism inside the seat.
Any and all suggestions would be appreciated. Not a life threatening situation but is a minor irritant since all but one of the cables have broken where they attach to the "dog" that locks the seat back to the frame. Sorry so long. thanks in advance for the help! ------------------ Howie 79SC |

I can't say for sure without looking at exactly what you're talking about but I might try going into a specialty bike store and see what they can do for you. Do the shorter release cables have the same attachments? Would they work if they were just a bit longer? If so then surely you could come up with some way to lenghten them. Maybe cut them in the middle and crimp the extra required section somehow???
I really might be speaking out of my ass because I cannot see what you are talking about but I would think that you could make something work... good luck, |

Go to a Volkswagon shop like Bugformance in Sac. Look at the cables for the heater control cables for bugs and the like. These cables should be more than long enough for you, and they have the Z-shaped end on them. You'll more than likely have to do a little mods to the other end, but should be easy. Don't go to a bike shop, good idea, but they will not have it ( I use to work at one). Let me know if this works for you.

Actually, I dissasembled my seats the other day to check them out and I know what cable you are talking about. Leland is right refering you to the bike shop. The cable end is very similar to the one that I have on the end of my brake and/or gear cables. I don't doubt that you can rig something up for the other end (clamps?). I'm not sure if the VW cables will work but that is also an option should all else fail. Good luck!
