G50 clutch noise/click/ping
 

Hello all,

Long time reader/rare poster here looking for help with an odd clutch problem.

Vehicle is a 1987 911 Carrera with just under 30,000 miles.

Clutch operation and feel is normal with the exception of a click/ping/clunk at the very top of the pedal travel as it is being released.

The pedal must be depressed fully and then let out to make the noise.

It started doing it intermittently last fall, but it shortly thereafter I put the car into hibernation for the winter.

During the first drive after the spring thaw, it didn't exhibit this symptom but since then it has returned.

I got under the car to take a video. I put the camera as close to the noise as I could to get the best sound: YouTube video

I did some searching through the forum and the closest possibility that came up was this thread regarding the necessity for the fork/shaft update.

Is this the most likely possibility? Also, it is safe to drive the car in this condition?

i have similar issue when clutch is completely depressed a ping metallic noise can be heard. did you resolve the clutch issue? if so how?

Same sound here..it happens at the top of the pedal travel as you are releasing the pedal. I want to say it became more pronounced when I put the turbo clutch disc in (versus the rubber centered one), but I cant be sure as that installation was a few years ago. I wouldnt worry about it, my '88 has done it for at least 3 years and 40k miles. No issues fromt it that I can tell.

I surely don't hear this on my '89...she has a fresh clutch (factory-rubber) a few thou' ago........

your fluid go to go? (both tranny and clutch slave cylinder) Linkage/adjustment specs ok?.....

For me to hear it, I have to release my foot from the pedal somewhat fast, like in the driveway just playing with the pedal. A slow release, like when you're pulling away from a stop light, wont do it. Im almost positive I started to notice it after the turbo disc..

All adjustments and components are good.

Same here on my 87, my buddy's 88 does it too.....maybe normal?

Having just had my 87 apart for an engine rebuild, I put just a bit/schmere of grease on the clutch fork where it engages the throw out brg. and in the little pocket the slave cylinder engages. Maybe one of those surfaces is a bit dry and causing a littlle judder or grab as it moves. Don't think either would cause a serious problem but I can understand it being annoying. You "could" remove the slave and put a dab of grease there without serious disassembly.

I just noticed the same thing today on my '87. It only happens occasionally when releasing the clutch in first gear. The knock sounds like it comes from somewhere under my AC control. The sound is new, so I'm assuming it isn't normal. I looked through the records from the previous owner and the clutch and clutch fork were replaced in 2008 (less than 5K miles ago) and the flywheel was resurfaced. Anyone figured it out?

bet its the clutch pedal return spring in the pedal cluster. Lift up the floorboard, liberally apply grease at both ends of the spring - or rebuild the pedal cluster.

I realized today that it also makes the same noise when I'm coasting to a stop and I tap the brakes. It still occurs when starting to accelerate in first gear. Sounds like a clunk under the AC control...possibly more towards the passenger side. I checked things out when I got home and I found that if I grab the passenger side tie rod and shake it up and down it makes a clunk. Is this normal? If not, what part of the tie rod might be making the noise?

I also had my shocks/a-arm bushings and torsion bars replaced a week ago. Any connection?
