steering wheel question

does it matter how the steering wheel hub is placed on to the steering shaft?
I've removed the wheel, and hub to work on the bearing. 2nd time i removed the assembly cause the turn signal stopped cancelling. I looked over the switch and noticed the little spring was off so i put it back on. After re-assembly, still it will not cancel. Ordered new switch from our host and during the latest dis-assemble, it dawned on me that the tab on the hub might have been rotated wrong. Is this possible?

Is the cancel ring tab on the left side?

well I would like to know where to place the tab, and try to see if the switch was needed.. the switch seem to operate just as well as my new one. Bently does not show this, nor does it mention it....
