As stated previously, the Wiki will initially be dedicated in the memory of Warren Hall, whose knowledge has helped many of us over the years.

No one could be more deserving.

Good for you!

What classes of Porsche information will you archive? Tech, I presume, but what about history, old images, publications, etc. How about providing an outline here so that potential contributors can see how they can help you?

Yes and Yes. My goal is to make this as comprehensive as possible...

Any updates or progress on this project? Been looking forward to this.

Wayne,

Is Peter working on this?

Is this project dead or alive? I've gotten no response from Peter.

Hear, hear. I could really use the wiki right about now. The search function is becoming more difficult as the post quantity increases. No to mention, it would be nice to find a topic page for things like Air Conditioner since searching for "ac" as most people call it won't work.

Wayne and Peter, let's get the wiki framework up and let the community help build the content, please.

No response at all. Peter was last active Oct 9. I guess it is dead. Sorry to see that happen.

Wayne 962 12-09-2008 02:37 PM

Peter unexpectedly had Twins, so he's taking a few weeks off to catch up with life. I also have to make some coding changes to the Wiki code, but I've been busy trying to get the Boxster book completed in time for next-season's holiday rush. I predict the Wiki will be unveiled early next year...

Thx

After the Wiki, are there any plans to do your 911 transmission rebuild book?

RWebb 12-09-2008 03:37 PM

glad to hear it's still alive, Wayne!

djpateman 12-09-2008 05:45 PM

Whoo-hoo! Maybe Peter can find room for my paint code research. In a few months it should be well developed, and more accurate that any source I know of at this time.

Wayne and Peter;

This is a great initiative. Thanks to alot of people on these forums I was able to learn immensely about the 911. When it is possible, I will contribute information to help build the best Porsche Wiki there will ever be.

I'm psyched out!

There has been a Porsche wiki available for over a year...its at www.pcarworkshop.com. I created it because I had a need to place all my DIY 993 stuff and I wanted to contribute back to the Porsche community (including engine rebuilding stuff).

Being a completely open wiki, several people have been contributing articles, etc. since its started, including members of both Pelican and Rennlist. It was primarily 993 focused at the beginning, but now I have others building out sections for 964's, etc.

Its primary purpose is to hold DIY articles and information, as well as reference information, and its not tied to any particular business nor is it for profit. Its totally designed for collaboration, being built with the same software that powers Wikipedia.

I fully support a Pelican Wiki, but I also believe that the more sources of information, the better! (Hey I buy parts from Pelican so what can I say! :) )

Cheers,

Mike

Hey Wayne

Some of the BMW 2002 fellows have been kicking the idea of capturing some 2002 facts on a WiKi site. I have been the lead so to speak.

Our focus was authenticity and originality with trailer on each section about modern upgrades.

We have a few willing to work on it. If you are moving forward on the WiKi project, I do not see a need to recreate the effort.

Does this fit with what you are working on? If so, let me know.

On the BMW2002FAQ there is a good start on technical FAQs if that is a section of your WiKi. Obviously permission is needed.

Our initial focus as stated, is authenticity and originality. BMW was not good at documenting that. There are good sources for restoration (Mike McCartney's books) and repair (BMW Repair Manuals) so we do not want or need to recreate that information but it may be nice to have repair and maintenance information on line at some point.

Best on the project.

Very nice. If I ever get a 993, I'll be sure to visit. ;)

The Pelican Wiki will be released probably this Spring. We have compilied a lot of stuff, but I need to make changes to the software. We've been working on other areas of the site recently that are more in line with eCommerce, as the economy in it's downturn doesn't leave too much room for working on fun Wiki-like stuff...

Here is my problem with this approach. A wiki is by nature a collaborative site, in that the more people collaborating, the better. By collaboration, its means the project scales and is of better quality, since multiple people are involved.

It makes sense to me, in order to build a good wiki, that it does not get created and filled with content by a commercial team, but it's the community at large that builds the wiki. It then become independant of resource limitations that Pelican and others are experiencing now.

However, that being said, I have a counter point from my own experience. Many Porsche owners, for some reason, while having content to contribute to a wiki, actually do not know how or have the time to submit articles to the wiki. It usually ends up on the adminstrator to create the wiki article from whatever format the content was submitted from. Now it does not scale like a truely collaborative site, but become bottlenecked.

Anyways, good luck on the Pelican Wiki, and hopefully something will come of it.

Cheers

Mike
