Speedometer mystery box...

When I was removing my speedometer today to get the odometer fixed I found this little black box attached to the speedometer wiring. What is it? Some sort of covert German intelligence gathering device??

What year car? Could be a kmh>mph compensator. Cruise control device?

Edit: Err...I'm assuming your name indicates the car is an '86. So...it's most likely a kmh>mph compensator.

It is an 86 ROW Carrera cabriolet with no cruise control.

That's a converter that Porsche added to later 911 Carrera's to fix the problem owners were having after owning an SC. It seems, owners were not happy with the new cars (slower, heaver, quieter) so a compensator box was fitted to increase mph/kph "feel". It worked, remember to reinstall it.

Thanks for the reply James. How exactly does it "compensate"? Does it add horsepower somehow?

Yes, James, does it add horsepower somehow?
Do tell, we're on the edges of our seats.

It is probably a kmh>mph converter. My RoW 85 cab had something like that too. I sent the speedo to Palo Alto Speedo and had them recalibrate the speedo so it wasn't needed.

It appears some certain SC owners have a wit quicker than their cars.

+1! I guess you don't need the the huge tires and uneven lift with that little device. You can pretend to have a Super Carrera.

Yes it's just that old SC vs Carrera stuff rearing it's ugly head! I have no clue what that is but it's not OEM. Might be the mph/kph converter unit.
