Moving to 16's?

I may have the opportunity to purchase some 16" wheels for my 1973.5 911T. Currently the car has it's original 15" Fuchs. I'm not well versed in what will fit so I'm asking for a bit of help. What size Fuchs will fit both front and rear without rolling the fenders. What size tires will fit the appropriate wheels?

Thanks in advance,

RAL

Thanks for the quick reply, and I apologize for something that's probably discussed almost daily.

cheers,

RAL

RAL:

First, YOU LUCKY DOG! You have a Brown longhood. I LOVE early 911's in Brown. Next, DON'T get rid of your 15's. They are so distinctive and even a little exotic now that every Tom, Dick, & Harry has 17's, 18's, 20's, 24's etc. The 15's help distinguish your car as being from that wonderful era of the early 70's.

I would have a tough time switching out 15's on an early car.

Good luck!

Mike

No problem. No apology is needed. Glad to give a hand.

If you are looking for uber performance tires and do not want to go with Hoosiers, your choices in 15's are pretty limited so going to a larger wheel does make sense. I am running 205/55-15's and they are ok but my speedo is off and I am not sure if I will upsize my wheels or recaliabrate my speedo.

Thanks Momo for your enthusiastic response - I do like the color. I'm not getting rid of the 15's, but would like to see what it would look like with 16" wheels.

New cars might outperform the classic metal, but they just aren't exciting.

I took a look at the chart that was recommended, but what's the simple answer? If I wish to go to 16" with no modifications then what do I go with?

Then again I might end up staying with the 15" wheels if it's too much of a hassle.

cheers,

RAL

If you just want some nice road rubber, your 15's with 205/60-15's will work just fine. Like i said, the biggest issue is gettingthe sticky stuff for 15's (Kumho's V710/V700/Victoracers, Toyo RA ??). If you keep the 15's you are pretty much limited to a 50 series tire

16x6 with 205/55-16's all the way around will work good with no problems. you can even refinish them to look like your earlier wheels.

The issue I have with 16's on early cars is the appearance. They have an additional 1" vertical lip at outer edge that my eye doesn't care for, a little too forward looking.
A 205/55 16 on 6's is a good fit, nearly correct diameter and if you are looking for a wider range of "performance" tires that would be a consideration.
But if it's just for street use I'd stick with the 15's, totally subjective.
I would suggest looking at other longhoods with that size wheel first if possible.
