Electrical issues
I am back
My 83 SC still has issues starting (battery). I have checked the battery; When I purchased the car, I replaced the battery since it was over 5 years old. I replaced the alternator after I brought the car to a local Porsche garage. They said that the alternator was not charging the battery. I do not have the numbers in front of me but rather than pay the ~$575 for them to do it, I replaced the alternator. They also check to see if there was a drain on the battery--there was not. I took the car out a few times without an issue; last night, I going going to run an errand and it would not start due to the battery. I realize that chasing down electrical issues could take some time, but was wondering if there were any suggestion(s) for what I could test next. ![]()

Check the fuses and grounds. Rotate the fuses in their clips and clean them with a brass wire brush or something similar and some contact cleaner. Make sure there is no corrosion. Same goes for the battery terminals, of course.
Take a voltmeter across the terminals of the battery with the car off. You should see 12.5 volts or a little better. When running, the alternator (if functioning properly) will make the voltmeter read a good bit higher, like 14-15 volts, IIRC. Hope this helps.
