Try not to strip this hex bolt. It is a standard counter-clockwise turn to get it loose. I stripped mine and had to take a dremel cutting tool to cut a slot in it.
Got lucky and it came out with a straighbladed screwdriver. I then went and bought a replacement hex bolt. Try some PB blaster on it also good luck, Bill |

You might be referring to the large set screw and jam nut at the front of '77-on shift housings. Other than the housing mounting bolts, there are no other large bolts on a factory shift housing. I suppose if these two parts co-mingled molecules due to corrosion, it could then be considered a bolt. The set screw should have an internal hex on the end.
For non-corroded parts; to remove the jam nut, reinstall the shift housing on the tunnel. This method anchors the housing without having to build a holding jig on the bench. A vise will leave DIY scars in the aluminum housing. Use a 1/2" dr. flex handle and a 6-socket to loosen the nut. Orient the handle to push downward to loosen it (handle is on the passenger side). What did you use to replace the large "bolt"? Sherwood |
