Shouldn't be *quicker* at least not unless the engine is built different. Could be 901 915 differences but that again would depend on what you have in there. Early 911 912 boxes were the same gears.

My '69 912 is a bit of a hot rod, and I think a variety of factors account for the difference (not all in favor of the 912).

- my 912's gearing appears to be shorter than the 911 (I don't know what is in the gearbox, but it has a 914 p/n and it looks like there is a VW logo stamped on the case.).
- 912 is a coupe vs. '70T Targa
- 912 has 195/50 vs. 911 205/60 tires (~8% greater revs/mi)
- "912" engine may have been modified. It sounds "better" than the 911 and pulls harder through higher revs than the 911. The sound might be Webers vs. Zeniths. But I've got no info on any internal modifications.
- The Technical Specifications booklet doesn't list a lower weight for '69s, but it does show a lower power to weight ratio beginning in '70, so maybe the "later" cars are a bit heavier.

On the other hand, the 912 has some heavier bits.
- 85 liter fuel tank vs. 62 liter for the 911, so it tends to have more fuel in it.
- steel space saver spare vs. lighter Fuchs in 911.
- '86 Carrera front suspension.

Correct. Normally, a '69 would have a 901, while my '70 has a 911 gearbox. I've been told that 912s had lower gearing than comparable 911s, but I'm not even sure that I have the original transmission.

Friends:

Here's my '65 912 at an autocross two weeks ago. It's just a 1,720-cc but has S brakes, 22 and 28 mm torsion bars, lightweight seats, 7x15s, etc. It's covered 180,000 miles since I bought it 40 years ago and has won in both concours and track events.

I've had a 911 and a 914, but this is the car for me: lightweight (2,000 lb) and nimble. Surprises plenty of 911s!
