How many 912 to 911 conversions out there?

I recently met a guy who picked up a non running 912 for a song and a dance. It has two motors which need some researching a bit. One of them supposedly is a very high performance 912 version built by a reputable 912 guy. The rest of the car is in very very solid condition. The car has been in storage well for over 12 years. The interior is supposedly nearly perfect and there is little rust anywhere. I have not seen it in person yet.

How many 912 to 911 conversions out there? How difficult was it?

Thanks

There are others that know, but I do not think it is difficult. Just a couple of rear motor mounts in the back

I think a built 912 would be great. One Porsche club I belonged to had a guy with a 912 he set up. He got more interst form the other Porsche guys than most of the other cars.

Plus, with the total weight and weight distribuition advantage, it could be a blast to track. And cheeper on tires et al...

Enjoy.

Man I'd kill for a built 912...or better yet...a 69 912 with a 2056cc jake raby 912e/914 engine.

don't butcher it with a /6!

The word i got on the hot motor was it 2.0 or larger. I will gather as much info and photos as soon as I can.

The Type IV in an early 912 has become a popular swap lately.

That 912/911 is Awesome looking. I really like the color, it really highlights the body lines and looks very classy.

what color is that?.....Aubergine?

I wondered about that after seeing a 912 for sale here very cheap. Wasn't sure what was involved but maybe I should have pursued it.

The burgundy 912/911 is strikingly smart.

Here's K. Zimmerman's, a favorite of many:

I've had both 912's and a 911, and I think a built 912 would be more of a fun "play" car!

Speedo is in the midst of this conversion now. He goes through changing the motor mounts and everything. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/345183-swb-911r-beginning.html

I would not convert the 912. I agree with dan, add a really hot jake raby built motor. It will fit right in, is lighter, and will give you better hp to weight ratio. http://www.aircooledtechnology.com/Home_Page.htm

Shhhh!!!

That is exactly where I'm headed. Looking for a roller with a 5 speed.

Its easy, if done well with a valuable engine (read: aluminum 2.0) it could boost value a great deal. If the car is that good tell him to hold out and find a period 911 engine and swap that in. Try and have him avoid the temptation to go 2.2,2.4.2.7+. Keeping it stock but with a 911 engine is also really fun to drive.

You're team will make the next round but will suffer an ignominous defeat at the hands of a great dynasty.

Why are you even thinking about cars at this time of year?

And I warned you about the goalie two years ago... :)

I bought a '69 912 with a rebuilt '71T engine last fall. I like the "sleeper" aspect, and it is much quicker than my '70T. But why not keep it a 912 if you can?

deathpunk dan 04-17-2008 05:06 AM

Why is your 912/6 2.2T so much quicker than your 'real' 2.2T? Is the weight difference that drastic? Are the 901s geared differently?

curious minds want to know...

Porsche_monkey 04-17-2008 05:07 AM

ditto.
