Are most of these people on crack? How could any remotely intelligent person seriously consider asking this much for this car? Am I missing something?
I am constantly amazed by the prices these people ask for these cars. I could understand if it was an extremely low mileage car or a rare model. I buy a few small parts every now and then on ebay, but I would never even consider buying a car there unless I could look at it first. Imagine buying a car sight unseen. Scary! ------------------ '80 Targa |

they are hoping that the uninformed on ebay will bid without knowledge...you don't see him posting an ad like that here...
he is just testing the waters to see if anyone bites |

The price is way too high. Perhaps if it had 20k miles. I am also amazed at the prices they get and the number of Porsches that get sold, if the transactions go through, on EBAY.

But notice how many don't even get a bid. This one doesn't have one yet, and I'll bet it doesn't get one that meets the reserve. You can do better by going to the local dealer and buying one off the lot. What are these people thinking?

I think alot of eBay automobile transactions result in deadbeat bidders never following through. Just a good hunch. |

Well it seems like a fairly good car but the price is just outrageous!

Orb: I agree. Most of the "sales" that take place on Ebay are to kids just messing around. I can't tell you the number of times I see relists stating that the bidder was a deadbeat.
I would *never* *ever* buy a car off of Ebay, sight unseen. I bought some rims once - unseen - and got lucky, they turned out to be fine. But a fricken car? No way. Unless I can look at it, listen to it, drive it, and generally get a feel for it, there's WAY too many variables in a car purchase to be able to intelligently make a decision on whether it's a good deal or not. There's still no bids on that buggy. Not surprising, since it's worth $20K at best. ------------------ Mark Szabo 1986 911 Targa 3.2 1987 Escort 5-speed 1.9 RIP The Porsche Owners Gallery |

If 23 grand is ludicrous. What is it really worth?

Last numbers I heard from Bruce Anderson in Excellence for an '86 were:
low--15719 median--17872 high--23925 The 148000 miles pretty much excludes it from the "high" category. Tom [This message has been edited by emcon5 (edited 05-17-2001).] |

I don't think $23k is outrageous. Sure, its more than the car is really worth, but you see '86s with that kind of mileage advertised for $23K or more all the time (not saying they usually sell for that, but its not totally out of the ballpark).
My guess is that he'd be lucky to get $20K. I wouldn't pay $20K for that car, but if you advertise it and present it right, I think you could move it for $20K. It doesn't look like a bad car, its just got enough miles that it will take a "mileage hit" as far as pricing. Realistically, I'd say its a "high teens" car. So he's asking 10-15% too much. Not really outrageous. You gotta remember that E-Bay is not really an auction place anymore, its really just a classifieds site. So many people have high reserves these days. In a true auction, he'd set a reasonable reserve to get the bidding going (like maybe $15K), if he really wanted to "auction" the car. When you set a reserve at or above the market price of the item, though, then it just becomes a classified ad. |

The 23K may be a reasonable price for a low mileage coupe or a cabriolet, but there is definitely nothing to justify this amount for the car. Not a new paint job or new interior or a rebuilt drivetrain. Here in Hawaii, we have a smaller selection to draw from than you do on the mainland. Even though used car prices are high here, I could buy a lower mileage car for less money. I could see the car bringing 23K if it's the one that someone trully wanted, but starting the bidding at 23K takes some guts. That should scare people away immediately.
