915 Splitting trans from Dif
How tricky is it to split a 915 trans from the differential? 1). I have 1 good trans-915-79 with cracked differential case. 2). I have 1 bad trans-915-83 with a good differential. I would like to combine the good trans and good Differential. Thank you for any input!!

on the unit with the good diff, remove the housings and gear stacks, leaving the diff alone. now you want to save the pinion shaft and the shim stack that went with it. remove all the gears from the pinion shaft, leaving the bearings down by the pinion head.
use the complete mainshaft from the other trans and stack the gears from the other trans' pinion shaft on the good pinion shaft. set up the forks and reassemble the housings. that's the basics, but you may want to or need to inspect/replace any wear items/bearings in the process. see this post Can't Shift Into First

Thanks, Looks like there is no easy 1 2 3 way to swap the trans and differentials. I have to break it down and re-assemble. Am I correct?
Thanks John Walker's Workshop!! Wish you were closer! Do you have time for Out-of-State trans rebiulds. My email is Wthraen@aol |
