Porsche Crest

We had some problems last night with both servers (both at the same time). Needless to say I was at the shop until 6:15AM this morning restoring Exchange and SQL Server. We're still not 100% back on email yet.

The truth of the matter is that this software was not really written to handle this amount of traffic! (Congrats!) As a result, I need to archive (for later posting on the site), all the previous posts, and then delete them from the system. I am hanging onto the content, so it's not lost, but it's a shame that I have to take it 'off the air' in the meantime.

I've pruned the messages now, and it should be working ok. Seems to start having problems when the number of posts exceeds 30,000.

Keep talking guys, this is a 'good' problem to have!

Sometimes I have to hit refresh to get new posts. My computor seems to retain old pages and puts them on the screen when I hit the PP bookmark.

Wayne,

I have noticed some data corruption on some of the older archives. If I do a search on posts I made, some of the really early ones have some characters missing/added.

Ever think of going to Linux+MySQL?

Personally, I'd lean towards Solaris with Apache and an Oracle8i back-end.

I like the convenience and features of Wintel IIS platforms for web servers, but for anything requiring significant scalability and integrity, call me old fashioned, but I prefer *NIX.

This site is on beefy hardware, yet it's gone down at least twice in the past week or so...

That's not a bad suggestion (Unix), as I used to program in it. But its been so long, that it would take a very long time to upgrade/transfer over the server.

I have been using Win2K now for about 2 months on this server (along with a new Dell Machine), and I have been very happy. The BBS software is the one at fault here. I keep trying to bring the problem to their attention, but they are a bit arrogant over there. We're one of the largest BBSs running their software on the internet, so they haven't really seen heavy traffic problems. They have a new version out, but I'm not sure (looking at the architecture) that it will improve things...

Wayne,

If you're interested in going the *NIX you should take a look at the setup at http://slashdot.org. They've got some serious iron (quad Xeon, dedicated load balancer, etc) but I don't think you'll have to deal with the same loads they do. I think they're using *BSD, Linux, MySQL, and their own front end (free, but would require some hacking to be a BBS of this type). Anyway the software's all free. Your time, however, isn't.
