964 oil cooler in a SC
I live in Las Vegas and my '82 SC with a trombone runs hot (10 o'clock hot on a good day in the summer). I have been looking for a good used Carrera fender cooler and fan for a few months now. My question is, would a 964 cooler mount up with the same or reasonably similar amount of work? What options do I have?

That's what I have in my SC. Not too difficult to install.

Good enough for me Moses. Although now that I have the Rota Foxes too, I don't want you thinking I am trying to build your car

Very interesting, I do have an extra cooler/fan assembly off C2 that I could possibly use...do you have any pics of the instalation? What needs to be done to make it work? How well does it work on your car?...I recall that you have 3.6 transplant in your SC. Thanks in advance.

964 cooler in an earlier car? Mark- really? they mount quite differently than the 89 older carrera coolers. The 964 cooler is wider than the older unit, fittings in a different configuration, so this is NOT an easy bolt in deal !
964 coolers mount with the radiator facing the tub. The airstream comes in the front valence on the 964 and is ramped to the cooler with surrounding sheet metal. If you were to install it in this fashion on your 89 and older, realize that it will hang down below the front valence too. better you go find a radiator cooler from a 89 down

Driver side space is less than passenger side , due to the bulge porsche put in for the battery. If you lose the fan, perhaps there is enough space to tilt the 964 at an angle so you keep oem ground clearance . With a custom install it could be possible. I can't say for sure as we only mocked up the 964 coolers inside the front fenders, then decided to go differently.
The only 89 down car we did install a 964 cooler in was modified to accept that ramp portion of the 964 tub to make it work, and he had 964 style bumpers too (which obviously took care of the height "problem") The extra capacity, if you can get adequate air flow thru it, would surely be enough for a 3.6 on Jack Olsen's car, we installed a driver side Setrab to piggy back the passenger fender mounted radiator that he had already. a 150 row unit (from our host) is not that much money and once it is tilt mounted (fore-aft, not side to side) there is plenty of clearance. Other clients have also had 150 row units installed with good results. Don't forget a decent rock shield and shroud work to keep the air flowing where it should go

Agree w/ TRE. Not an easy fit at all
The 993 and 964 coolers are sidewinders ![]() the tub has a duct that is sealed all around from the central intake to the exhaust in the wheel well area tub side of the duct ![]() the drivers side is the mirror of the passengers

Thanks guys! The info from you confirms what I heard previuosly about fitting C2 cooler on Carrera. I guess I'd be looking for other options.
BTW: thanks for the exhaust Dave!

Seem to recall Pelican has an oil cooler radiator kit for the SC. Not cheap. $1500?. Plus install. I know it's available.
You have hit the nail on the head about oil cooling in the SC. I had the same problem with the trombone type. You get in traffic or hot days, the temp goes up to 210 F, and you leak some oil from the seals. My solution: I sold the car and bought a Boxster. Didn't want to spend big bucks on an old car. You need a radiator and fan to cool the oil. They did that in the mid-80s. In Texas, all SCs have radiator oil coolers.

I am just looking for a solution that doesn't cost $1500 plus welding etc. Moses got my hopes up for a second there, I am just glad I didn't pull the trigger on ebay. I plan on having dual coolers eventually for track days/peace of mind. Would it be prudent to install a driver side cooler first, or does the trombone not contribute enough to effect the system? Lastly, does anyone know of a source for good used Carrera coolers?

I've been running a 993 oil cooler for a few years , it fits perfectly and works amazingly. It's awesome since I'm going with a V-Ram the oil cooler will be perfect.

MJ, do you have any pics of your car with bumper in place? It was mentioned that 993 cooler hangs lower than front valance, therefore exposing itself. How did you solve that problem? Thanks in advance.

Does the widebody bumper and flare help with the fit or do you think it would still fit if you had a narrow body car?
Also, does anyone have the dimensions of a 964/993 cooler with and/or without the fan?

Does the 964 cooler accept the same size hose fittings as the earlier (SC, 3.2) cars?

OK thanks. So you have to make a new bracket, weld it in, wire up the fan, move the horns, what else? Do the factory lines reach the 964 cooler or did you have new ones made up going from the hard lines to the cooler?
