I plan to install an early S front bumper/spoiler on my car. My initial plan was to order one from Stoddard, have them paint it and ship it to me for my installation (they painted my car and did a fantastic job). I got the estimate today:
S bumper/spoiler = $1350 (ouch!!) Paint = $ 200 Shipping = $ 200 (too large for UPS) The fiberglass reproductions I've seen are only around $175 - $250. Can someone recommend the best quality reproduction or is it worth it to spend the mega-bucks on a genuine (is it metal?) Porsche spoiler? Thanks. ------------------ 1971 911T - 2.5L Big Bore |

Personally, I would not pay that amount. GT Racing makes great fiber glass products as do other co.s. I would shop around. Fiberglass front spoilers can get pretty dinged up.I'm on my third in 12 years, but my car is pretty low. Unless your are showing the car-go with something cheaper. You will not be so pissed when something happens to it.

I'm not showing it. I mainly want something that fits properly and is an exact reproduction - if that's possible, the $1350 isn't worth it to me. Thanks for the advice.

Keep looking, I know there are good repros out there. My friend put one on his very nice 73S (he took the OE one off because he didn't want the bumper guards for track use), and it looked perfect.

Buy a used one, since you're going to paint it anyway. I just got a fiberglass one for $150 (Rennspeed Motorsports) and -- while I haven't fitted it, yet -- it looks indistinguishable from the steel one I'm taking off.
I'm also planning on adding a carbon-fiber splitter on the bottom of the spoiler. Does anyone have any experience with these? ------------------ Jack Olsen 1973 911 T (3.6) sunroof coupe jackolsen@mediaone.net |

I've seen used steel ones in very good shape for $250 to $600.

I, like Marv, saw one ... a steel one for $350 and all it needed was to be striped of the paint, primed and repainted. They are out there, just be patient. They turn up on ebay every so oftwen and if there is anything that you need looked at in the New York area, I will be more than happy to take a look for you.

Thank you all very much for the help. One more question: does the S spoiler have textured paint anywhere? If so, where is the correct location?
PS: I thought I read somewhere that both steel and fiberglass S spoilers were used by the factory during production of the 72/73 S's????? ------------------ 1971 911T - 2.5L Big Bore |

Wrong on that one. '72 and '73 S spoilers were steel. Maybe glass on a racing model? But not the street machines.

I've got a fiberglass spoiler from GT Racing on my 73.5 T and am very happy with it. It is a good (not perfect) fit and has withstood its share of bumps without any problems. For the money of a steel one (even used...if you can find one) I could do it all over again. Plus, I've saved a few pounds - even if it came off the wrong end! You didn't mention anything about the deco strip. If you plan to put one on be sure to pre-fit before attaching, some are of suspect quality.
