'66 steering damper - keep it or toss it?
After 42 years, is the rusty little steering damper doing anything useful or can I take it off?
Why don't later years have the damper?

Bump...
Anybody? This thing is seriously in the way of routing the brake lines and reservior hoses for the new dual circuit master cylinder kit.

I would take it off and see how it feels. Porsche put iron weights on early cars so it might just be a "safety" thing to decrease oversteer. My 1971 911S does not have one and it feels great.

FWIW, I am keeping mine. I think they were only used on the early cars, so I am sure you can dump it. That's what Bernie said, at least...

They were a kick back of the old 356,VW days to try to eliminate steering vibrations.Do you need it probably not but what the hell they put it on there for a reason. Yours is probably worn out but they are available new and are also relatively inexpensive too.
