I have a block with the SN GD028115. Told it is a 2.0 but would like to verify as its not the original

That does not seem correct, but I do not have my book handy. Only way to know for sure if it is a 2.0 is to measure the bore.

How many cylinders?

That seems like a 914-4 like number.
My 914 book shows GAxxxxxxxx numbers.

It could VW Type 4.

Best,
Grady
