My 73S (Work in Progress)

This is not my daily driver (quite), but it seems to get used whenever the opportunity arises - Ford Mondeo (same as Contour / Mystique) or P-Car. The thought process is something like... Hmmm may stop raining later - better take the P-Car just in case!





As funds allow, it is being slowly improved - though mainly the mechanicals. The target is to make it a bit more like an S (ie proper front bumper etc) but I am car from fanatical. And I make no excuses for the wheels - I wanted fully polished wheels, but if I get bored with them, I can always paint the centers.

By the way, the car came from the Dana Point area of CA at the end of 1999. It had a blue on white background California plate. Can some one tell me the difference between a white plate and the 'sought after' blue plates??

I love that orange on the early 911s!

I have the nice blue CA plates on my '71E. I remember the PO just told me that those were standard issue up until a certain year (I forget the year exactly). If you have the blue plates it just means the plates were issued back then and they've never been renewed or replaced.

I'm sure someone on this board will know the full details on blue plates...

Most California plates are white now, either with yellow and red "california" and blue letters or red script "california" with blue letters. The 70s blue plates are royal blue with yellow letters. They are sought after only in that they show that you've had the car for a long time. I think the newer ones look better, personally.

FYI, California also has a number of specialty plates that can really look good on a car. One example is the "save the whales" plate. It is ocean blue with a dark blue whale on it. Perfect for the 80s whale tailed Porsche.

I dig the one with Yosemite Valley on it. However, I opted for the plain one "9XI" because I like the simple esthetic.

I feel like I am cheating you guys!!!

The colour is actually Guards Red. The car was resprayed from Signal Yellow by a PO. The front fenders and hood were later resprayed following light accident damage. The 'original' red paint at the back has now actually slightly oranged!!

Nice car Marcus! Equally impressive are what look to be rare photos of SE England in the sunshine!

Did you personally import the car from CA and do the mods to pass MOT test yourself? The reason I ask is I'm thinking of moving back to Devon soon and would like to take my US spec car back if possible, I just don't know if it will be (financially) worthwhile.

I didn't actually bring the car into the uk myself, though I bought it before it just after it was imported.

Getting registered over here was not too difficult either. I haven't time to write now, but will post something shortly.

Nice car - Love the colour, blood orange?

Have you considered the 'early 911's ' monthly meetings in Richmond? There are some great guys there from all walks of life, even cars like mine are welcome ('82 sc). No anoraks, just enthusiasm and chat ! If you're interested let me know ... I live in North London and use it as a great excuse to get the 911 out for a spin!!!
