new orange in the garage

I just keep going back to Targas...and this one looks like a keeper. Having just sold the '72, I needed another "therapy car" as my wife calls them. It had to have cold air so I could drive it more than 4 months out of the year, I wanted some unique options and it had to be an SC or early Carrera.

I found this '81 Targa on ebay and after some phone calls with the owner, bought it. My wife had spring break time from her school, so we flew to Dallas, jumped in a 27 year old car I'd never seen and drove straight to New Orleans. When the valet at the hotel asked where the R and D were, I parked it myself. Two days later we drove through to Florida, with only one hiccup; the starter overheated and we had to bump-start it once. I've already replaced the starter .....

I've ordered a PCNA Certificate to confirm the options, but as the pix show, it's ORANGE, and not a standard 1981 color. The seller claimed it was Gulf Orange, and we fell for it quickly. Also has factory sport seats, the rare (and not my favorite) one piece spoiler, lamp washers, cruise. And the PO upgraded the a/c completely and added a cat testpipe with Bursch--sweet sound. Sony Bluetooth radio, Momo wheel and knob. 128K miles and original paint; a real preservation class kind of car.

Current plans include H4s, 8" rear rims and installing a previously bought ducktail. I've had 4 conservatively colored 911s over the past 19 years, but this one makes me smile like a kid when I walk up to it.

Love the unusual colors, and that one is very unusual (and very nice!).

I've seen that all rubber rear spoiler in person a few times, and I'm with you on not being a big fan. From what I recall, it's incredibly heavy, too.

Yep, it's heavy alright. That's one of the reasons there's a duck in my future.

I have always wanted a 911 in that color, but was never brave enough to do it! Very nice look...

Thanks guys. It was a bit of a stretch for a conservative like me, but it is so different.

There were a number of signal orange (similar color) longhoods running around (and lots of 914s), but never seen an SC that color.

Very Cool.

Color looks like my continental orange (Code #107)

Congrats on your purchase, a great looking Targa.

That's a beauty. Congratulations. Just be aware that you'll have to drive closer to the speed limit than people driving duller colors!

Even though it was a special order color, the code should still be on the passenger side trunk wall. My 84 came from the factory with a color that special ordered. It has the code sticker on the trunk wall, and written in grease pencil in a couple of places I have found.......

Of course it is in the shop being painted viper green right now!

Cheers

Very nice...I'm quite fond of the unusual colors, especially on early cars, though the orange looks nice on the SC. I'd definately get rid of the big black rubber tail and put a duck on there...looks very nice with a targa.

Beautiful, beautiful car. There was a thread in the last week or so about mid-year orange cars, you could add to that as well. Please post some more pics when you get a chance. I've been saying I'll own an early orange car at some point for a while, but more and more orange short hoods seem to be appearing lately, so I might not have to pony up for a longhood.

On every SC I've seen, it's on a plaque on the front driver's door jamb. And on a sticker on the inside of the trunk lid near the latch. Nothing on the trunk lid.

Geez that's one of the best "Targa" colors I've seen! The Duck will finish it nicely. I've also never seen that combo....good choice.

I agree is very like Continental Orange, which I have seen as factory option paint up to the '83 model year. Check the paint code or run the VIN with PCNA. Looks absolutely brilliant, what a great buy. This is mine:
