My '82SC has developed some steering wheel play/slop, I can turn the steering wheel
L&R about 2 inches before I feel the resistance of the wheels turning. There is no shimmy or shake until 60mph. At 70 it smooths back out. There appears to be no play in tierods outer or inner. Under the car with a helper turning steering wheel back and forth it I can hear the slack/click coming from the middle of the steering rack. I'm thinking i will need to remove the rack and inspect it. Does anyone know where I can find a tech article for R&R of the steering rack. I saw on previous posts that repacking the rack with new gear lube might help, but I can't help but think I'll end up needing another one. Any advice. www.geocities.com/jamey928/index.html |

Based on your description, you may have wear in the rack and pinion. Some model years (maybe all) could be adjusted.
You do not need to remove the rack. There is an access cover under the pinion gear. Early cars used shims to adjust the spacing, Later cars had some type of threaded adjustment. If this is the problem, it is easily fixed. Go in and have a look. ------------------ Chuck - '86 Cab, '77 Targa, Family Truckster |

Oh JOY!
I was the one who repacked my steering rack. Of course this was not my problem. I had clicking sounds when I moved my wheel L&R. It turned out to be the big nut on the shock mounts were loose. Anyways, my rack has the access holes to it, howeve within there is a somewhat heavy duty spring to keep the rack pressed firmly into the pinion and in the assembly so there is no slop. I would go after the U-joints in the steering column, then check the rack mounting both under the car and the upper mounts (two allen screws) in the trunk area. Good luck. ------------------ Nick Hromyak '85 Carrera 7 & 9 Fuchs Havin' Fun in Sacramento |
