The G50 6 speed from a 993 would probably be easier but still hard. I bet this has never been done. Interesting, definitely not a bolt up.

How about both tranny and engine from 996? With they fit in an older carrera?

The 996 transmission doesn't use the same bolt pattern as the 993 and older 911s. You can buy an adapter plate from Kennedy engineering. But that still leaves you a problem.....where do you put the starter.

I researched this for a Boxster transmission installation into a 914/6. Same problems with the bolt pattern and starter.

In your case you are probably better off getting a G50 6 speed from a 993 or 964.

Why the huge desire for a 6-speed. In 996 guise it would not offer that much more from a performance standpoint, probably less as it weighs more. You would probably need to replace all the gearing to fit the 3.2 torque output as well.

Only benefit I see from a 6 speed is that you can keep the 6th ratio high (for cruising) while still maintaining 5 ratios that can be performance oriented. 6th would not really have to be "designed" to fit with the other ratios.
