No brake lights

When I put the car away, everything was working fine. Brought it out of storage and my dad, who was following me, seems to recall the brake lights working. Went to get the car inspected today and apparently they dont work. Changed the fuse and checked the bulbs but neither side works. Where do I look next?

OK so after some troubleshooting I found that with the key off, the right brake light goes on when the right turn signal is engaged and the same for the left. The turn signals dont go on but I don't think they should because the key is off. This is wierd, no? I just changed the steering wheel yesterday but nothing should have changed there. BUT, I noticed some play in the steering column that I dont remember feeling. Could this problem source from the steering column/stalks housing? Guess I will break out the books and the multimeter. Ideas anyone???

parking lights will activate when you move the indicator to the left or right when the key is off/out. doubt braking lights are related to a steering wheel issue/change. check your brake light switch by the pedal cluster for adjustment. there shoud be something in the tech articles

Not sure about your year but it should be close to the same circuit design. Are you certain you checked the correct fuse? Also is yours Mechanical or Hydraulic BLS's?

Steering Column does not effect Brake Lights.

According to the fuse panel cover, the brake light fuse is #8. All the blade fuses were intact but I replaced it anyway with no luck. I dont know what a BSL is (maybe a brake light solenoid?) and not sure which one I have. I could use some info on where to find this BSL (pedal cluster?) and how to check it. Will start first thing tomorrow because its dangerous and illegal to drive as is and I'm itching to take her out (just put new, larger profile tires and steering wheel on).

Sorry about that, BLS = Brake Light Switch.

Hydraulic System will be at the Master Cylinder with two BLS's attached to it on the side with a circular white plastic harnesses connected to them.

Mechanical BLS will be at the pedal cluster.

Is it safe to assume that a 1972 911 would have a mechanical switch?

Try pulling off the tail light assemblies and cleaning up the grounds, including both terminals on light bulb sockets and where the sockets ground to the tail light housing.

Check that the wire(s) is plugged into the master cylinder.

I got it! Removed and cleaned the brake light switch (it is mechanical btw) and determined it was functioning. Some very odd things started though. With the brakes on (switch removed from bracket defaults to brake lights on) and the right turn signal engaged, the lights would blink back and forth between the brake light and the REVERSE light. Wiggled some wires, grounds, and bulbs and miraculously, it all worked. Took all day but I finally buttoned it up and it still works. Off to get an inspection!

Glad you solved it but a bit scary, thankfully your pops was behind you and not some coper or worse a soccer mom on the phone.

Pelicans, those going from Hydraulic to Mechanical BLS's please take note you must maintain the mechanical swithces for safety.

Good Job Brian!
