Newbie Looking for 911, Questions
Hello gang. I have been told this is the place to go for anything 911. I have my eye on an '86 Targa. It's not too near my home, but I was thinking about ordering a remote inspection such as SGS or Automobile Inspections LLC. This would be in addition to a pre-purchase inspection since then they could check the engine. Has anybody ever had any experience with the remote inspections? Are they worth it?

Robert:
The important thing is to make sure that whoever does the PPI knows 911s. I would think that one good PPI would be sufficient. Is the 'remote inspection' just to see if a full PPI is worth pursuing? If you just need someone to take a look at the car, you could post the details here and see if anyone is close or knows the car. Hope it all works out, Paul.

Welcome!!
Chupacabra,
Can't help you with the inspection question, but want to say welcome to the forum. I'm down the street from you in Tampa, so if you have any questions or need a hand overhauling your transmission (my next major project, since I'm currently overhauling my suspension). Regards, Joe V

The car itself is in Marrietta, Ga. I see there is Automobile Atlanta which could probably take care of it for me. Thanks for the response. Robert |

Welcome aboard. Usually you can find a friendly memeber here would will take a look at the car before you send it for a PPI. I am sure there are people near by the car you're looking at

Problem is, now I am second guessing myself....not about getting a 911, but which one. While searching, I found another one that I may want. That got me to thinking maybe I want a blue one instead of red or a coupe instead of a targa, or get the blue cabriolet down the street that I can get now instead of waiting and getting one from across the country....
If only I had the money and the space, I would have one from each year!! In different colors too! I have to focus and make a decision. Robert |

Welcome, Robert.
I'd suggest you just spend a few hours on here and search "PPI" and "Purchase inspection" and find out what to look for. Educating yourself about it is free and easy. If you can drive a few cars in your neighborhood I'd suggest that. Hands on experience is worth every minute. Check your local craigslist or something and try to go test drive a few cars, even years/styles you may not think you're interested in. You might surprise yourself. And don't fall in love with a particular car just 'cause it has big boobs. Then, once you're a little better informed, and that car in marietta is still interesting to you, make a new "Could someone check out a car for me in GA?" thread or something of the like. I'm sure someone will help you out. In addition it will save you some money on that superficial 'inspection', and it's more satisfying to send some new friend a gift card or something than to pay the inspection company. Good luck!

Good luck with the search. You are in a pretty good location to find some nice cars - it is much more difficult up here in the "American" motor capital (not that very many are built around here anymore). I love my '86 - it's a fairly unique ride when you think of it. It is the last of the 915s, yet has the upgrades in the interior found on the last of the Carreras. Porsche seems to run an edition for two years than make some improvements. '86 is one of those years that stands alone - it's different than the '85 and different from the '87. Hmmmm, I need to spread this philosophy around - that way maybe someone will view my car as a collectible, then it would be worth five times as much. OK, all you '86 owners I need you to join me in promoting this whole "Our car is rare" attitude

drive as many as possible... I drove everything from a '77 Targa to a '04 C4 Cab and settled on the '87-89 era of 911s (mainly for the improved gearbox)... oh yeah, and driving them is free as well

To help with your internal struggle, remember cabs and targas come with some special features that many of us cherish. Wind noise and leaks. Coupes have sun roof cable fun and headliners. Make sure you are ready, no matter what car you choose, you will want to enhance it. Suspension, tires, chip, free flow exhaust. Tired engines needing a top end rebuild or more are dollars, same as cracked dashes and bad trannys. The G50 is by far better than the 915. Best of luck and welcome to the family.

You understand, of course, as soon as you put them on someone is going to tap your car.
Just sayin'.
