Fuel gauge not working - newbie

Hey guys, my fuel gauge works fine until it gets to down to 1/2 a tank, then it gets stuck. I did a search but couldn't find anything specific. Can anyone give me instructions on how to fix this? My limited knowledge tells me that there is probably some sort of floater that is getting stuck??

I have little to no wrenching skills. If this is something I should leave to my mechanic just let me know, but I figured I would try to get my hands dirty and save some $$ on labor.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Sounds like the sending unit , can you tap on the gauge and get it to move? If the gauge moves its the sending unit and is easy to change and not to expensive, it is right on top of the gas tank and you might give it a GENTLE rap to see if the float breaks free, good luck.

The unit is easy to remove. Just be careful not to break the thin wires when you take it apart. Mine was gunked up but easy to clean.

The wire the float rides up/down on can get rusted/pitted, causing the float to stick at certain points along the range of motion. Unscrew the sender from the tank (disconnect your battery first!), lift straight out and you will clearly see the float. Slide it up/down by hand and look/feel for any rough spots. Hit the wire with 0000 steel wool and, if not too bad, you should be good to go.

Be sure to order a new gasket, from our host, before you pull the sender.

Thanks for the help guys. Within the first few weeks of having the car I was amazed at how good of gas mileage I was getting - little did I know. I took my buddy's dad for a ride and we stalled going up a hill, right after I was telling him how reliable the car should be. Oh ya, this guy was the president of the local Corvette club.

This him?

Being president of the local Corvette Club is like being head of security at the mall.
