Are you a waver or flasher???

Every time I see a P-car, mostly older model 911s, 914s, 928s, 944s I automatically flash my lights or either honk at them.

This afternoon while I was on my way home, I came across a red 993 at a stop. Without hesitation, I flashed my light and the 993 simultaneously flashed also. When it was his turn to pass in-front of me he waved and I honked after which I followed him and we got side by side at the next stop. We had a short talk since he happens to have a 930 and it was a nice scene two p-cars side by side making short talks and both were guards red.

Since I got this last Spring, I only had 2 friendly encounters including this one. Had a few which either the other driver was clueless or was just minding his own business.

Have you experienced the same as well. The first time I came across a fellow p-car owner (997) and I flashed my lights as a gesture but the old guy smoked me instead

So now I sort of feel my way first on newer model p-cars before I flash or wave at them.

I wave. Older models respond, newer models not so much.

I mostly get waves from older 911's, a few from the newer ones, and the occasional nod from a Ferrari or Lamborghini. That's always fun.

I still wave no matter what response I get back. I just am so flippin' happy to own mine I don't care if I get anything in return.

95% waver! 5% toot-toot...

Usually if visual contact is made, a "reverse McQueen" or wave as I pass, whether they're going the other way or falling behind to the right ...or a gentle toot-toot and wave... Flash occasionally but I use my headlights at all times on all my vehicles (pre DRL safety measure), and flashing - & hooting - can be misinterpreted especially by other nearby non-p-car drivers... don't want to add to the already sometimes tricky perception of stereotypes, do we?!

Many many p-cars in SoCal... I'd say most older 911 owners cheerfully respond, but it does seem many - but by no means all - of the newer cars (and maybe newer owners) seem to be a little less likely to indulge in such camaraderie. Sometimes it's just they are preoccupied with traffic, same thing that happens with motorcyclists...

My theories for other non-response are:
1. It is beneath status/trophy owners to acknowledge lesser (i.e., older) vehicles and their drivers - certainly here in SoCal, it *seems* that it is this type of p-car owner, that is somewhat aloof and promotes the porcupine joke impression; they don't appear to love the cars so much as the impression they perhaps presume owning one makes, given that's their privilege, but recalls the immortal Ferris Bueller quote. 993 owners 50/50, 996 and newer owners seem least likely to respond overall (given Boxster and other non-911 drivers indulge more rarely here anyway - and Panamera/Cayenne drivers... I don't ever recall such there!) to play.
2. They haven't got so upside down and spent so many years getting attached to a long beloved, maintained & often modified vehicle to yet know our delicious sense of shared pleasure and pain...

Other times, instead of grins and friendly repeated lead changes, an aggressive, almost confrontational attitude arises, if one happens, while driving one's own road, to come up behind or pass a newer and I'm guessing "status purchase" p-car, often with them subsequently indulging in silly double-yellow-crossing/cutting-up driving... time to drop back/pull over and let whatever affront it is they imagine is going on dissipate. This occurs with some non-p-car drivers too - minivans, large pick-ups, M3s, Prius, oh and young women in economy import sedans.

Subi, Vette and Miata drivers seem more friendly, regardless of their or car's age - my guess is we all suspect we share a love of cars, and driving.

Then again I had a delightful encounter like yours with a couple with a pretty and almost new turbo convertible few weeks ago. All started when both vehicles happened upon each other dancing gently and politely through light freeway traffic, after a few miles they waived me off at an exit to chat. Perhaps needless to say it wasn't their first 911...

Also, I get a lot of smiles, thumbs up and stuff from random non-p-car drivers on the move, and that and great exchanges with such drivers or pedestrians at lights, gas stations or while parking. I never expected that when I first got my car back in '97, a pleasant surprise. Out two hours today, half-a-dozen 911 mutual waves/flashes... plus a few from others.

Having a dog, preferably >50lbs, in your Porsche, seems to help overall

Cheers
Barry

I'm a flasher, so if you see a Guards Red Carrera around P-Town, it's probably me saying hi.

I always wave for the most part, but if it is my good friend, who lives just south of me in the neighboring town, driving his brown 1982 SC, then I wave, flash, and honk simultaneously. A few weeks ago, I was going to get fuel and he was pulling into the local funeral home (not a good location to flash and honk, but I did) in his car, we were so happy to see each other that people outside of the funeral home must have thought we were crazy. Very few new Porsches respond to my antique 911, but I still wave anyway just because.

DC, yay! Love the defiance in that, takes all the crushing rejection & futility out of getting no response!

Okay, I'll bite. What does the McQueen gesture mean? I've seen the movie countless times and never could decipher the meaning other than I thought it was made somewhat in jest and out of respect. So, clue me in!

I got tailgated by some jackass in a black 944 in Nashville, after he was done with my bumper, he just attached himself to the next one, another good representation here. I wanted to wave at him.

Nettles, I just returned from Portland Thursday... while sitting out front of Bailey's Tap Room I saw a Guards Red Carrera amble by, perhaps our paths crossed.
