Oil Leak Woes....

Well I finally had a few days off work and school and decided it was Porsche Time. Hence the window seal question and now these oil leaks. The car is a 73T which I think has the orginal engine. Unknown miles or last rebuild(if any). Multiple oil leaks from all over the underside. This morning I did the clean the undercarriage and let it run for about 30 min to find out where the leaks were coming from. Can you guys help me determine if these leaks are the kind where I have to drop the engine or can be done in the car. Here is leak number one, leaves a decent 3-4 inch spot almost everywhere I park. Its running down the timing chain cover but the orgin in up high.

Leak 2 is coming from what looks like behind the pully.

Any help is appreciated, thanks guys.

I am going to take a stab and suggest you check the cam tower line (s). They can seep and or leak from both ends....and an easy cheap fix. Otherwise it's really tough to tell even from the pictures.

+1 on the Cam TowerLines, but the pics don't look that bad for your baby's age.

The leak around the pully can be from two spots. The main seal (not the one at the flywheel), but there is really no way of fixing this without splitting the case or it is from right below, this seal can be replaced without a full engine drop/tear down. Hard to say where the leak around the cam box s coming from.

So after reading Waynes rebuild book I'm thinking the Cam leak is coming from where the timing chain and cam gear meet. One O ring and a paper gasket are there. The Cam tower lines are dry. Anyone do this fix with the engine in the car?? Ok so another pic, the green arrow is where its leaking down between the head, and the red is the path the oil follows.

Both of my cam boxes were leaking. There is no way to fix this unless the engine is out of the car...
Looking for help re: my chains and more

Even Seal can't help you with this one.

It would be infinitely easier if you just pulled it out and did your fix... I'm not even sure you can get the chain housings off in the car and you need to get behind those...

there's got to be 2 dozen or more Pelicans down where you live... just offer beer and they show up for your engine pull party. Only takes an hour or so anyway

Best regards,

Michael

Make sure it's not just the rocker shaft leaking. There is a rocker shaft that has one end in that location. If you pull the valve cover off you can see if the shaft has moved sideways and caused the leak. The o-ring and gasket can be replaced in the car but it will be a pretty big job. Your other leak could be the main seal behind the pully which is not that hard to replace or it could be the o-ring seal around the number 8 main bearing which can only be replaced by splitting the case.

I would not attempt any engine reseal without the engine out of the car. It's really not very hard to drop an engine and a great time to freshen up all of the bits and pieces.
