Wow, some guy is selling my car ...

...

Here is mine - as I have posted it plenty here.

And here a car just like it - except that it is RH drive and pictured in a mirror-ed landscape.

They are asking $41k for 100K+ miles! http://losangeles.craigslist.org/lac/car/688271800.html

I'll sell you mine for 39k!.

George

Please write this guy some emails, asking about the RH drive and the FM10s. Also ask if he took that picture in Canada.

Helps to explain why cars are never really what you expected when you go to see them...

George,

He has now switched to the top photo with the steering wheel on the left!

I would say flag it and get it removed but you might do a better service by posting another ad with same/similar headline and point people to this thread.

You guys are too kind. This dirtball is committing a crime. And it's very possible that someone less aware is going to get burned, it might even be an unsuspecting fellow Pelican. If it were my car I'd be making a call to the proper LA or California Law Enforcement agency. Nothing like a good "sting" to make your day. Our host has a little experience in this IIRC!

Questions:

aigel, is the information in the ad accurate for your car? If so, had you advertised it recently and thus this is a "theft ad?" (I don't follow the Pelican ads for newer cars too closely, so forgive me for asking something which may be obvious.)

Could this be a legitmate ad but he just "borrowed" the picture of aigel's car to represent his own? (Again, if he just copied aigel's ad, the answer is obvious.)

Finally, if it is a stolen ad, how would the scam work--take a deposit and run (ie. to secure car for a PPI?)

Only one picture in the ad is mine. No other information (besides year and color) matches my car. Guy must have pulled the image off Pelican - that's the only place I posted it.

I thought this was funny, finding my own car for sale. My brain had a deja vu and it took a few seconds to realize what was going on. The mirror image really threw me off!

I am not worried about it. Nobody will buy a 109k 993 for 41k anyway. And if they do, they better go see the car.

George

I bet he just stole the pic... I can't count the number of times I have just googled images for my kids projects or birthday invetations and 'stolen' images to suit. However, he should at least note that the image is not of the exact car, but craig's list is a lot less professional than other sale sites... he/she could just be an inept idiot.

Aigel - it is a REALLY nice pic though and I can see why anyone would like their car to look like that especially if they are selling it!

Best regards,

Michael

Thanks George. Looks like he "borrowed" a classy shot to advertise his own car--no wonder you could laugh at the ad.

He hasn't committed a crime. He's just using a picture of someone else's car, because he doesn't have a good picture of his car.

If he were doing it correctly, he would say "This is not a picture of MY car, I don't have any. Please come look at my car."

Slimy and unfortunate, yes. Illegal, no.

send him a Notice of Intent to Sue for Copyright Infringement -- always fun.

note: a copyright is automatic - you don't have to register things with the C. Office to have a copyright (that only makes the legal stuff easier; e.g. damages are presumed if registered, but must be proven otherwise)

Interesting that the image was switched to normal from mirror this morning. Unless one of you guys gave him some grief about the RH drive, I am betting he is reading this thread already.

I took it as a compliment to my car and photography but do not approve of him passing my car off as his. I guarantee his car does not look as good as mine.

Still taking offers for my car (in the picture) for over 39k!

George

I won't be happy if someone use my picture as for sales. Also, there are many scam out there using this method since the seller don't have the car. Instead, he use someone else pictures to lure buyer.

About offer, I will offer you $39k if I can sell mine for $39k

I sent him an e-mail. He responded and said he's out of town, but will be back over the weekend and would "love" to show me the car. I may take him up on it.

Fantastic detective work. I took the picture at sunset, so even the time is pretty close. Looks like I posted the same eve:

Will this get me kicked off the board?

Cheers,

George
