E-code?

How do I tell if I have e-code lights? I'm selling a pair of sugar scopes, with Cibie H4 lamps. The chrome ring around them has a DOT stamp on it (could be from the original lamp maybe), but the front of the lens where it has the Cibie mark says E2 on it, so I'm confused.

If you have sugar scoops, then the housings are the standard US housings made for a DOT sealed beam. The lamps sound like the H4 replacements for a stock US sealed beam. The E2 is an E-code designation. Of course, what most people think of when refering to "Euro" lights is a completely different light assembly.

Why do you want to know if you have "E-code" lights?

The 'E' means e-code, but there are several varieties. Guessing that also on the lens is an H4,
which is one of the types that will fit in the sugar scoop. There may be a sticker on the back w/ E2 and H4 on it.

In the US, the cars were imported with sealed beam headlights in Sugar Scoops that were DOT approved.

The DOT refers to the lens, not the light. None of the e-codes were officially approved by DOT.

There are other H4 lights that do not fit in the sugar scoop - the ones that most people here call H4's. There are also H1's that look a lot like them, and H5's that also look a lot like them.

H1's are generally regarded as the best (most expensive, too and no longer made).
H4's (both kinds are next).
H5's next
Sealed beam last.
