Support it in the front? The clutch end?

Or the rear, the bumper end?

It's not too hard to put a Type I in a 912, using those mounts, if that helps.

I put a type IV D-Jetronic engine in a 71 911E. It was a stock 1.7 with more than enough torque to make it fun to drive.

180hp? Are you going to water cooled? If it's an air cooled VW engine and really puts out that kind of power, you can sell it for enough to buy a used 911 engine.

Don't butcher the car.

my 5cents worth.

. . .
I can't imagine that the engine has that much value in it. The big dub motors are disposable. (Even though you have to pay $$$ to get them professionally built) Most any bug engine that I have ever seen or heard about that had serious grunt had a lifespan that could be measured by how much time it spent under full throttle acceleration. The cases stretch and have to be disposed of on a fairly regular basis.

The best VW builder I know was very successful road racing his cars in the 80s. The engines had a maximum life span of less then 2 hours under full power. Toss the case and start again. After just 6 15-minute sprint races he wouldn't try to reuse the engines. He would open them, save what was still good, and start building on the next case.

My recommendation for him is to watch here or on ebay (locally!) for a deal on a complete engine.

+1

Talk to experienced Porsche owners/DIY's/mechanics for perspective. At the very least, consider a type IV engine that was put into the 912E.

the thought crossed my mind

The thought crossed my mind, once.

Then I realized that I was being dumb.

It makes sense to put a Porsche engine in a VW. But not the other way around.

Look for a used engine or take the plunge and decide to learn how to rebuild yours. I've chosen the latter, and will be a better human being and mechanic for it.

Good luck!

If you have a 911 and you cannot afford to replace or rebuild the engine, then you should not have the car. Sell it and buy something else. That simple,

Just hang on to the car and keep looking for a used "T" engine. If you do go with a type I, keep the HP under 100 to keep it somewhat reliable, or look for a type IV, you can safely pump those up to 110-130hp. But consider the time and money you will spend on making either of the above work, then look again at the T engine. Alot of us have been there, hung on, and worked it out. Good luck.

I'm suprised you didnt get the wrath I experienced years back when I asked a simular question. I had an opportunity to purchace a 1965 912 from an old couple that keep it in immaculate condition and rarely drove it. I think the were asking $6000. At the time I had just pulled a 2332cc engine and pro street trans. out of my Ghia. This Ghia would have blow the doors of my 3.2 911 in a 1/4 mile. As far as handling, well Im probably lucky I did not become a pile of road mud. Anyway I asked some questions about dropping a V.W engine into the 912. It was my first Pelican post.
Never the less the 912ers layed into me hard. This was years ago. I actually change my user name after that fiasco. Must have been about 6 years ago. Looking back....I wish I bought that 912.
Just thought I'd share.

+1! And an early 911 as well. Don't butcher it. Sell it as is and use the proceeds to buy something more affordable to maintain and drive.

i know it sounds snooty but you'd be doing the car a real disservice to put anything other than a 911 motor in it. hacking up a nice car because you don't have the money to do it right is the first step on the road to the junkyard.

lots of neat vehicles out there suitable for a hotted up vw motor. bugs, ghias, 914's.

agree w/ the idea of waiting for an inexpensive early engine to show up. i've seen running motors for $2k.

It's your car, not a historical artifact. Turn it into a planter if you wish. Seriously. Tell those people who feel it should be preserved for posterity to give you large amounts of money for it or shaddup.

That's not butchering it, just an interm solution while he waits/ saves the funds for a proper engine. The "bug" motor can always be removed when a 911 engine is located. And hey, at least it's another engine that was designed by Ferry.

Personally I'd wait, but it's not my car or money.

I agree, you have a car and you have an engine.....put them together and have fun!! I'm sure you could fab up a bracket using the stock 911 engine mounts to support the engine from the rear. Maybe some pics of the 1976 912E engine mount would help, I'm sure somebody has some. This reminds me of when I asked about doing an RSR replica on my '71S, I got lots of flack but the best advice was "its you car, do what you want with it"
