Cracked my 915 Trans. Case.

I cracked my 73 915 trans. case, where the detent and spring are.I over tighten the bolt and it cracked.Does anyone know if this can be repaired or do I need a new case?
Thanks,Dan

I'm sorry that happened to you.

I did this same thing when my CV broke lose and cracked the case around the detent bolt and spring.

I had 190, 000 on the trans and it was a '77 Mag case... time for action anyways I guess. I gave in a bought a rebuilt 82 SC aluminum tranny.

I can tell you that I JB welded that nut in place with the spring back in the hole. This was to make it drivable from Portland to Seattle(Remond) for the Tranny replacement.

Good Luck.

usually the threads just pull due to how short the bolt is. a 10mm timesert fixes that.

Call the welding supply shops in your area... they'll know who can help you.

Best regards,

Michael

A qualified welder can weld it (Magnesium alloy). My Mag. 915 had a large chunk broke off the bell housing. I talked to several shops before I found someone willing to weld it up though.
It's not a job for just any welder. They did have to try a couple of different fillers before they got it right. But it turned out great.
definitely remove it for this.

I would remove it to have it welded. Besides being easier for the welder to do a good job, Magnesium is flammable and if it accidentally catches on fire there's really nothing that can stop it from burning. This is one of the reasons why so few people can weld Magnesium.

You might want to try to seal it with some DOW 730 sealant. Drain the tranny, clean the crack out with some brake cleaner and seal the crack. It is fairly thick, like gasket sealer. Will not wick into the crack, but if you clean the outside of the crack, it may get the job done.

"DOW 730 SOLVENT RESISTANT SEALANT
A one part RTV paste which cures at room temp. to a tough rubbery white solid. Used for bonding, sealing and caulking where resistance to fuels, oils and solvents is required. Excellent on fuel line pipe threads, repairing fuel lines and tanks, bonding components exposed to fuels, oils & solvents. temp. range -85F to 400F. Stores refrigerated for years.

If you are going to do the LSD then you should just pull the thing. Then you can do other engine stuff easily if needed... Welding upside down is not pleasant especially with such a delicate task as magnesium... Just a thought.
