Air conditioning fan squeaky!!!

Hi,

My 1985 Carrera's A/C evaporator is making a squeaky noise audible from the vents. The unit is located in the compartment housing the steering gear shafts and looks like it's sealed by 2 or 3 clamps. Anyone can post a complete diagram or have detailed procedure for taking it out to oil the fan shaft that's squealing?

Tom

Replace it..............I replaced the evaporator motor in mine, and documented it pretty well, so if you're interested, let me know and I'll send you the document.........

It's probably not the fan shaft, but the fan rubbing against the housing. You can take it out by unbolting the two brackets, unclipping the three clamps, and unplugging the wires. It's relatively easy to do, but getting the clamps back on is a huge pain in the butt. You can get the motor new from Pelican for about $100 from what I remember.

When the bearings start to go the pressure from the smugglers box lid will make the fan rub. Try running the a/c with the smugglers door open. If the noise stops its the fan bearings.

Indeed, and oiling the system is a short-term fix......

Believe me, it's not a heinous job, but it's not something you want to do twice either.

Masraum,
I hope the Freon lines are not disturbed in the process you described, also wouldn't removing the 2 bolts and wires and clips enable one to remove the top plastic lid to see the motor/fan?

I just replaced my blower fan on my '85 for the same reason. Be very careful not to crimp the capilary tube that goes into the top of the box and into the evaporator. It looks like a silver wire but is actually a hollow tube. If you break the seal on the "wire" you'll wind up having to replace your temp switch which the tube is part of. It's not a hard job, just don't force anything apart.

The only thing holding the two case halves together is four (4) spring clips. The bolts you see from the top secure the fan/motor assembly into the top half of the case, and also secure the two case brackets.

By the way, I sent the document over, but it's a large file, so hopefully you'll get it. The A/C lines are out of the way, and do not interfere with the removal of the top of the case (along with the integrated motor/fan assembly).

Kudos to Michael for a great technical article

When someone takes that much time in order to save the next guy the trouble, it says alot about who you are!

Great work.

for anyone who hasn't read or gotten the write up that is being mailed around, no, contrary to what the books say you don't have to remove the freon lines, and the bolts/brackets that I am refering to aren't the 3 or 4 bolts that go into the housing, on the back side (towards the passenger's compartment) and on the front there are two stamped brackets. The one on the back is "L" shaped and the one on the front is on a diagonal, those, the thin capillary tube, the clips, and the power to the fan are all that need to be removed to get the thing out. It's a relatively easy job, but takes a while because it is in a somewhat awkward position.

Try spraying a lubricate can with a tube into the bushing areas. I had
a similiar problem and fixed it by lubing the fan bushings.

Good Luck
