911 carrara misfiring

My 1986 carrara has been misfiring (like it has has some water in the fuel or was running out of gas. At first I though I had purchased some bad gas. When I had used one half to the tank I filled up. It ran rather well until I was almost out of gas and It began to skip quite a bit.

I filled up again and it skipped a couple of more times when I left the station. I was close to home and did not run it any further.

I am wondering if that is a sign that I need to replace the gas filter of is the electric pump going bad. What else could be causing the skipping?

Thanks for your help

Regards,

Marc Gifford

did you wash the car recently? loosen the spark plug wire holders, and turn the 2 screws that hold down the distributor cap. Turn the cap over, and look for water. If you see water, then dry the cap, reinstall.

Also, try running the car at night in the pitch darkness. If you see a lightshow, time to change spark plug wires.

Could be the fuel pump too ...
Edit: Oh wait, you already mentioned that.

How old are your ignition cables?

Could be anything. I'm thinking that if it has not gotten wet (eg, rain), and has been well serviced, maybe a little gremlin such as a loose connection. Definitely needs a little service.

Guys would a bad/dirty MAF do this?

Possibly. However, ignition would seem to be a more likely culprit.

Check the spring loaded carbon electrode in the center of your distributor cap. I had one break once, and it gave me very similar symptoms.

How long has it been since you replaced the DME Relay?

A fuel injector may not be electronically functioning. With engine running, disconnect injector harness from injector one at a time. Engine speed should fall each time until you find the one that;s bad where there will be no change in RPM.
