Front wheel bearing adjustment?

I just put new grease seals and bearings in the front of my 85 911.

Any advice on how to adjust the bearing would be helpful and if it needs to be readjusted after a run in period.

I tried backing the retaining nut off 1.2 turn and the hub has a little play or rattle in it. Less than 1/4 takes the rattle out an the hub still turns ok.

What is the procedure.

Thanks.

While rotating the rotor, tighten the locknut until the thrust washer can barely be moved (side to side) by a light touch (moderate pressure from one finger) with a screw-driver. Light touch is key - Not prying off the side of the hub.

**EDIT: Per Bently Service Manual

It's pretty easy.

As observed how Johnson Alignment in Torrance did it:

Using a straight edge screw driver, rotate the rotor and quickly tighten and loosen several times until snug.

Before doing that, with wheel on and jacked up safely, place your hands at 2:30 and 7:30, check for play/wobble then 10:30 & 4:30.

After tightening, check for wobble/play with the wheel on.

That's it.

If I tighten until the rattle is out of it which is just before it totally snugs up, it sounds ok then.

I just did not know if there was a rule of thumb like tighten till snug and back off 1/4 turn.

Thanks all.

Any added is appreciated.

You should be fine, my buddy and I did it on his car and it worked just fine. Snug do not back out.

Unless you are like super strong the screw driver technique can not over torque the bearings. Don't worry, it is trully easy thing to do.
