SC Power Antenna?

Any links to a good one that'll fit? Preferably, one that's inexpensive because I don't mind raising the antenna but I'd rather push a button.

Porsche Antenna

Bill,

I went through the same thing. The original Hirshman antenna is expensive, you can find used ones, but I already had a used one...

Someone on this site gave me a lead for the HARDA Antenna. Here's what I bought, the exposed part of the antenna looks just about like my original antenna (84 911). The price at that time was $50.51, plus S $ H.

NIB HARADA Amplified Universal Power Antenna - Nissan and BMW

The antenna comes with a switch to raise and lower the antenna so if' you're running a CD you don't have to have the antenna raised.

I got one of the "Hirschmann" antennas off of ebay (I don't believe it was a "real" Hirschmann) for around $45.00. It works great, is quiet, has a black mast, but in retrospect I wish I had heard about that other antenna (HARDA) first. If I recall correctly, someone said you could adjust how tall the antenna sits at full extension. The antenna I purchased sticks up really high, and it would be nice to have that feature.

I've been happy with the HARDA antenna, if nothing else the fender mount and retracted antenna looks just about like the original, which is not a thing of beauty, but does look original.

No, there isn't any way to mechanically adjust the height, but you can do that by releasing the switch at any point you want the antenna to stop.

Chuck Rollins user name Bench-Racing carries the Hirschman replacement antennas. Do a search on here for his contact info. I have one on my SC now. I wired up a switch between the Blue antenna power signal wire and the antenna so I can leave the mast down while enjoying a CD.

Chuck has both the Chrome and Black antennas...reasonable price$ too!

Good luck on your project, Cooper

I have been told, I don't know if it is true, that if you have a 78SC that has the manual antenna on the left side then the automatic antenna will not work as a replacement unless it is mounted on the passenger fender. I don't know why. So if you buy one and get it to fit, please post.

I got an antenna from these guys for $39.00 which fit perfectly in my SC. Antenna model is SX-11 & is identical to the Harada 2040 which is probably the most common replacement antenna and very hard to find as I believe they are out of production

Sorry, the SX-11 is adjustable by releasing the switch at any point. I initially installed a Hirschman which was either all the way up or all the way down when the radio was turned on or off and was about 45" long. Can you say, "Got your Ears on, good buddy?" So, I found these guys and, presto, problem solved with a couple hours more work. Now I can pop it up about a foot or 18" and it doesn't look like a whip antenna.

All power antennas can be height controlled with a switch, you just have to know how to wire it. The biggest trick it to get it right so it retracts when the car is turned off. Otherwise it is extended when you power down.

To answer the question about a manual antenna on the drivers side. Yes, there is room for a manual antenna on the drivers side but not for a power antenna (gas filler). Any power antenna must go on the passenger fender.

As Cooper said, we sell the chrome and black power Hirschmann antennas for Porsche 911 1966-1988. Check ebay or you can Paypal us direct to order. Coop use to rebuild his original antenna but now with the price of a new antenna being so low he just replaces the whole unit.

Well that's that then. Actually, that kinda sucks. Oh well, I thought it was worth a shot. My antenna is on the DS fender right next to the gas door.

Charles - My antenna hole is on the other side of the bulkhead from the gas filler and I can't see why an automatic antenna can't go in there ??

Antenna Schematic...

I don't think it's critical to have the antenna lower itself automatically upon turning off the key, but here's a a schematic if you want to make that happen.

the power antenna might fit on the drivers side if you don't have A/C, the drier takes up the needed room.

My 78 "had" an ac drier mounted in the fender side closest to the wheel, the original manual antennea on my car is mounted opposite of the drier in between the door and the fire wall pillar.
