I need help to buy 911 carrera

Hello everybody,

I am looking to buy 2001 911 carrera. Until now I have been driving only Mercedes. While I was looking for my dream car I notice that on a lot of used carreras the engine or transmission have been replaced. Is that t something normal?

I will really appreciated if you guys tell me what I should look for before I buy the car, because I don’t want to end up paying a lot of money and then again paying more to replace engine or transmission.

Any feedback will be greatly appreciated
Milen

Hey Welcome Milen!

A must, do a PPI prior to or a as a condition to purchase. This thorough inspection is well worth the time and money.

Where abouts do you live?

Not that I've heard, but the PPI advice is golden.

Milen,

I also concur with the PPI recommendation. I would go one further and say that, WHATEVER YOU DO, make sure that you buy a car that is either already covered under an extended warranty, or buy an extended warranty with your car. I have experienced both a motor replacement (2001 Boxster S) and a transmission replacement (2002 996 C2), both of which were covered under warranty, and both of which would have cost me over $10K if I had come out of pocket.

I say this not to alarm you, but to protect you. These cars are great cars, but when big stuff breaks, it can cost mucho $.

I believe in these cars, and I LOVE my current 2002 C4S, but part of my love for it is that it is under warranty through 2011.

Good luck!

Thats sterling advice for those cars. You MUST have a powertrain warranty.

How do you get an extended warranty if you are buying from a PP?

There are a ton of these cars available. Take your time to protect yourself. There is the possibility that the current owner could purchase a transferable extended warranty from the manufacturer.

There were issues with the early 996's. One that has had the drive train replaced could be better then the one that has not. Find out when it was done, the later the better.

usually you can't get an aftermarket warranty if the car is out of factory warranty.

in other words, you have to buy a car that still has some factory warranty time left on it, and get the extended warranty before the factory expires.

one of the best there is.

you can get the car private then get the policy with them-

not cheap but cheaper than the alternative(s)

good luck

One bit of feedback is to move up 1 year to a 2002. I just wrecked my 2001 and with the insurance payout, bought a 2002 for only about $1k more. The engine is much stronger dues to the extra .2L and the suspension feel is tighter. Mine was a convertible and moving the extra year got you a glass rear window as well. The interior upgrades are a bit nicer as well. Just my $.02
