Front Wheel Bearing Replacement - How tight should the lock nut be?

I just recently went thru the work of replacing the wheel bearings on my 911 SC. I am curious how tight to tighten up the retaining nut. To much and I bind the bearings and too loose and wobbly problems.

So how do you know when its the right tightness?

About finger-tight. Do not put much force on this nut at all. Tighten just until the play is gone. Conventional wisdom is to tighten it so that a washer between the nut and bearing can be slid back and forth using the tip of a screwdriver. No prying. the washer should be slidable with finger-pressure. With 911's there should be essentially no wheel play. When you are done, the wheel and tire should not have lateral play.

I concur with Superman. However, before getting to this point, I'd suggest overtightening slightly to align the various components, then back off before adjusting to specs.

I just got done doing that this evening. Set the bearings, back off, set proper torque, a holdover from my aircraft maintenance days. Does it help, who knows.

The factory shop manual says 10 ft lbs, Bentley says 11 ft. lbs.

This is the torque spec for the clamping-screw on the lock-nut. You don't want to try and torque the lock-nut to 11ft-lbs! That would be an... unfortunate preload.

Superman has it although you probably want to rotate the hub while you are tightening the lock-nut and checking that thrust washer. The procedure for setting preload in on 401-12 in the Bently manual if you want to see it for your self.
