Thought I'd add some photos of Tom Amon's first NBT (narrow body turbo). It was the car that lead to the build of this thread's '73 Turbo and I was lucky enough to be able to purchase it when it came available recently.
This car is a 320 hp sleeper... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1266971296.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1266971339.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1266971378.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1266971412.jpg |

Curious what RPM range the boost kicks in? like 2200 or so? and with that what 0-60 times do you think it may have? just curious.
But I do love it! Man I think that is an amazing job of color and it's so sneaky to be packing some torque under there. I also really like the little touch of the 3.0 badge. To let them know it's not a standard pokey 2.7 or was that year a diff engine? |
Both cars have 7R wheels, not sixes. The white '73 has 225/50's on the rear and the aubergine 205/55's. Stock '75-77 Turbos came w/ 205's on the rear, I think? Brakes on both cars are from the C2. FWIW I have owned many early 930's and this set up out handles and brakes the factory set up by a long shot. I haven't gotten myself into trouble - yet. The car starts to slide and give as it approaches it's limits. In comparison the wide bodies just fall off the table w/o much warning.
The car's acceleration is almost mind boggling. You can't shift fast enough through the first 3 or 4 gears. Once your able to regain some composure and look away at the tach towards the speedo, your doing 120 MPH plus - and in a hurry. I took my mechanic, who has a 8 second 1/4 mile MG Midget and 10 second Honda, out for a spin. He was giggling like a little kid the whole time and estimated that we are pulling mid 11's to low 12's in the quarter mile. |
Sooooo inspiring. I love the outcome of both these cars, but that cream and green machine...........lovely.

Any problems with that 915 yet?
|
I contacted the original owner (poster) since the car was in the classified. Apparently sold to Europe.

we built a number of 3 liter and 3.3 turbo cars in the eighties with 915's. 1st gear is a joke- its just too short to even make it across the intersection before you have to shift !
the boxes held up well on street machines. But when getting wide sticky rubber on a road course, one client burned up the box in 4 events. Key is to get a billet side cover and oil cooling to help the box cope with the hp fwiw- the intended powerplant for my long hood "speedster" personal project is a 3.0 turbo with a 86 915 |
awsome, thanks for that info.

Scott,
You did a great job! The car looks awesome! I'm sure it is very quick! I have a 76 Targa with a 3.0 and I could use your help. It has 6X15's and 195/50/15 Yoks. Can you tell me the offset and backspace of your 7X15 wheels? Did you you buy real 7R's? If not, source of replicas or wheel widener? Did you have to roll, trim, or pull the rear fenders? Any rear clearance issues? Bob |
Wow! Your car looks beautiful…love that green interior.
