911 seat interchangeability question

I finally got my dream car, so I can stop lurking in the classifieds! One main question for now, what is the seat interchangeability? I have a 1973 911T with very narrow racing seats (want to keep those for future track use) and would like to install regular seats in the car for regular driving. I just bought an old VW bus with some ratty tan leather seats that look like early 80's 911. THey are tack welded to the bus seat stand. If they will fit (probably fit, should fit, etc.) then I'll grind the welds and get them out. If it's unlikely then I'll leave them in as opposed to welding back in the factory bus tracks. Any help appreciated!

Assuming the VW bus option does not work, laporsche.com has used 911 seats for sale and they often state the years the seats will fit. You have to drill into the interior links to find. This would give yo an idea of the interchangeability. You could buy a decent set of seats used for far less than having a set recovered professionally.

'74 the seat rails were changed. As far as seats in the '73 adapters would be required and seat height would be a factor, you may need custom made adapters.

1973 MY cars are the last of the old seat rail mounting system, 1974 MY cars are the first of the new. There are adapter sets made for the purpose of installing later seats in earlier cars while retaining the full range of fore and aft motion.

You're likely to find the seats you need at the PCA/Parts Heaven swap meet in Hayward this Sunday morning. Come on out!

Possible good news for you. I found a set of '71/'72 seats in the parts stash, and they're coming along for the ride to Parts Heaven. The Cap'n

Excellent news!! I'm 95% sure I'm going to be there, I have a VW meet in Woodburn Oregon on Saturday, I'll drive straight to the PH meet and take a nap in my truck. WHen does it open? How much do you want for the seats? How do I find you there?

THanks for all your help guys! I guess the VW gets to keep the later 911 seats...

The swap meet opens officially at 0730. We'll be there to unload and set up at around 0630, and we'll have some kind of cargo van as well as a white Vanagon. Green EZ up. I'll probably be wearing a large cowboy hat. Lotsa stuff, including a set of Recaros to fit an early 911 and the '71/'72 stock seats. Prices will be fair, and (to some extent) negotiable. It is, after all, a swap meet! I can be reached at (805) 886-0434 during the meet. Hope to see you there. Drive carefully! You can reach me anytime at: john@westcoastgarage.net

How are the racing seats mounted. In 73 and earlier cars part of the seat slider track is welded to the tub and part is on the seat itself. In later cars the slider is separate from the tub. If you are missinghte part attached to the car, you will be unable to mount the correct seats. How about a picture to help us out? Be sure to show where the seat mount meets the tub.

I'll dig her back out of the garage tomorrow morning for a picture of the rails before I leave for Oregon, great idea! A friend of mine who has a 68 912 looked at it and said it looked like the factory rails, but I really want to make sure. I will have to drink less beer and eat less pizza to fit less snug in those Recaros!

thanks!

Well, Cap'n I'm still in Portland for tonight and tomorrow, found a couple stashes of VW parts that I have to inspect before I leave this fine state of Oregon. Sorry I'm going to miss you! If a friend of mine actually follows through with going to the meet maybe he can pick them up for me, but we can arrange all that by phone tomorrow morning. If that doesn't work out then let me know where I can find you and your parts during the week and I'll swing by sometime soon!

I forgot to take pictures of the seat tracks, but I had my friend head to my house today and look, he said it looks like the factory mounting. I hope he's right!

thanks again!

Sorry, they're gone. I held them until 11, no one identifying themselves as you or your representative spoke to me, no phone call. They went to a shop in SF. The Cap'n

I appreciate it, got home from Oregon late last night, kept chasing parts leads until I ran out of money. Thanks again for holding them until 11! My buddy never even went. If any other sets of seats pop up then please let me know.

Sorry I missed those 9X16's too! Here are the pics of my existing seat tracks, could be Studebaker for all I know! See if they look like the factory tracks so I know what I'm looking for. I was going to drive the car to McMinnville tomorrow, think it might be a VERY long drive with those Recaros. Anyway, here are the pics. THanks!

IIRC, those are adapters. Jump start the thread again tomorrow AM, and I'll make some pix of the seat rails in a '68 that's in the shop. Rails/mounting are the same through '73. John

Thanks Cap'n I appreciate your help! I don't fit well enough in these seats to do a long drive.
