Engine Reinstall Help

Greetings all,
I just rebuilt my tranny among other things - on an 84 911 cab. I just put the engine back in todayu and am working on reconnecting everything. This is kicking my butt! Here's the 1st hurdle:
1. The clutch pedal is completely depressed - as though its got a spring pulling it down. I can pull the clutch pedal back out - but then it snaps back to the depressed positioin. What the heck did I do wrong? I did adjust the clutch cable according to specs. Could it be something I did here? I did not touch the clutch pedal when I removed the motor.

Mike

Your clutch is different than mine (mine's the same as a 901 clutch) but with mine you have to pull the cable tight from the tranny end before locking the nuts on it. Pull it tight, finger-tight lock the nuts, then check the adjustment. Does that help at all?

Hi guys - yes definately - I did align the t/o bearing. I don't know what you guys mean by "the clutch fingers". I'll try Christien's idea right now and then let you guys know.

Hey Hey,
I'm calling it a night - but I got it!!!!!!!!!! It was my inexperience.... again! I had installed the helper spring without any tension at all. Well no **** - huh? I now installed it with tension and walla! The clutch works as it should! and lo and behold - I can even shift through 5 stiff gears now! So tomorrow - after the kiddos swimming - I should be able to finish! Maybe even drive the dirty baby!!! Thanks guys - will post my adventures tomorrow.

Well there is a spring pulling it down, and you need to place a 2x4 or similar to prop the pedal up, and then make the clutch adjustments.
If you changed the cable be sure you have the correct adjustments at the front where that funky clip loves to make you frustrated.
Also be sure the cable is all the way in at the rear too, or your adjustments will not be accurate.

re clutch fingers - look at the pressure plate -- see the 20 or so thin slices of pie (the steel 'fingers' that are radially oriented and cut off in the center (where the throw out bearing will catch the tip of each one)? that's them

re funky clip - there is a thread on mucking with the cable clevis head - I posted on it or started it - I have never ever been able to get the holding pin on with the orientation shown in the parts manuals -- I just put it "upside down" so it pivots upward to lock

flat screwdriver and 90o hook tool may be of help for the install

Halle-freakin'-lujah! Glad to know I'm not the only one!!

FTR, it *is* indeed possible to do - I did it the first time when I reinstalled the engine and replaced the clutch cable. But when I went to readjust it (I had way too much cable at the tranny end so I wanted to thread some more through the clevis) I fiddled with it for what seemed like ages, and couldn't get that flipping pin to go in the right way. So in it went upside down!
