An open thank-you letter to the PP 911 tech forum

Just wanted to post a great big thank you to this great forum. I've just completed a full rebuild of my early 915 transmission (which of course included TWO engine drops, because I didn't test it right the first time!) and there's not a snowball's chance in hell I could have completed it without all the expertise here.

When I bought my 911 in the fall of 2004, I couldn't have identified which part was the carburetor or fan belt, let alone valve covers or distributor. Since then, thanks mostly to this place and Wayne's 101 Projects (though howstuffworks.com is an awesome site as well!) I've made it through all that stuff, including valve adjustments, ignition tune up, brake bleeding, etc. That was a large part of the reason for me buying an early car - I wanted to learn the basics of how a car works, without a lot of the more modern computer-aided stuff.

Taking on a tranny rebuild was a true test of what I've learned, and my ability to learn more. But with effort, patience, lots of reading, help from the forum and local guys, and a LOT of beer, I figured it out and accomplished it.

I wish I'd had a video camera running to catch my expression when it finally fired up!

A few particular thanks I'd like to mention: jim7 (local guy, from rennlist), John Walker, the demigod , dentist90, RWebb, Porsche Monkey, red-beard, 911quest, peritus, Gunter and Jim Sims.

A happy car, back on the road:

And you done a tranny rebuilt....! Congrats my friend...I consider myself not bad in mechanic as I'm an aircraft maintenance engineer...but I don't feel confident enough to start a tranny rebuilt. Have fun now my friend.
Ho...and your baby look awesome...

Syl, you could do this no problem with that kind of background. My background is music!

Paul, no, I haven't yet. Next step is to drain the gas tank and completely check out all the filters, screens, etc to eliminate fuel delivery as the culprit (which is not likely, but I still want to eliminate the variable) and then after that put an MSD CD in, though I'd like to find one to borrow first, rather than throw another $300 at the problem, because I don't think that's the problem.

Christien: fantastic job! Like you, I'm learning this stuff as I go (with my 3.2 conversion). It's amazing what a person can teach themselves with strong motivation and strong resources like our forum and Wayne's book. And like you said, "How stuff works" and other general Internet resources can be powerful as well.

Congrats on getting it back on the road! It looks great! I have a 72 T I started working on a few weeks ago. I found the Pelican site the same day I pushed the car into the garage. It's answered so many questions already and I haven't even asked any yet. I also just ordered a copy of Wayne's 101 Projects and eagerly await it's arrival.

I figure reading this forum has saved me a lotta dough. I also figure that it has cost me a lot more with all of the great ideas.

Brad, sorry, it's my birthday and my wife's got some surprise plans for the weekend. Even still, my car's not running properly on the track - that's what Paul was referring to above.

Markus, sure, no problem, just fly me over and put me up and supply me with beer!

I have been watching your threads with interest. I didn't have much to contribute so I just stayed silent and learned something....
Way to go!!
