Oil Temp Question

I was just wondering what a good temp is to see at the gauge for oil.

My 2.7 runs around 210 - 220 most of the time but, will occasionally climb to 225 - 230 if I'm pulling a grade on a warm day.

At what point should I be worried?

My 77 2.7 runs around 185 to 190....occassionally it will get close to 210.....you should be fine, but looks like you got about 20 deg F you could lose there...IMO

but oil is not water! Synthetic oils have a flashpoint of 400 degs......the issue with running warm is not the oil, but the metals in the motor...many have seen track temps close to 250 after a hard run......while i am not saying this is great! a full understanding of what normal operating temps are needs to be understood..

IMO

On my 85 3.2, the oil temp typically runs around here:

But on hot days when I'm sitting in traffic, it will rise to the line and sometimes above it. I have heard the 2.7 engine runs a bit hotter, not sure how much though.

Same as above except I have not gone over the line yet even on hot days in traffic, which is everyday here...using 20w/50 Amsoil Motorcycle oil.

My 2.7 runs around 180-190 on a typical day and around 200 on hot days... w/ eleven blade, and SSI's.

My SC has been hitting 230 since I bought it with over 100k on the clock. As soon as the weather is over 75 it just keeps slowly climbing until i shut it off. I have gone crazy slowly upgrading to no avail. I just recently changed to a numbered gauge off of my '71 and had it checked to make sure it is accurate. I pulled the heater and blocked of the left side of the shroud, capping everything. I have deleted the cat and gone to SSIs hoping that might be my issue. I installed a carrera cooler, replaced a semi-crushed line, and added a side marker scoop ( I am still waiting on the backordered fan). Tonight I am going to switch to synthetic and notch my bumper as a last ditch attempt. None of these upgrades have done a damn thing. O2 is deleted and the mixture is fine. Not to hijack, but any ideas before he goes through the same list of common upgrades?

Headrage/Trotskyite, your thermostat A/OK? Don't know much about the 2.7L but thought I'd throw throw it out there.

A thought

You want your oil to rise above 212 from time to time because you need to burn off any moisture in your oil. If you car never reaches 212 degrees at all, then your oil could become milky and I would recommend changing it more often.

My .02 cents.

In some ways, 911s are impressive vehicles. But putting a "trombone" cooler on an air cooled engine is a design flaw if you ask me. German summers can be hot and they do have heavy traffic so there's just no excuse. An SC w/out a Carrera cooler and fan is a joke.

I finally got to change my oil this weekend to "Brad Pitt" because the women love it. Anyway, I wanted the Aux T-stat to open before I did the change. This required placing a towel over the engine grille to allow the engine to heat up. The exercise gave me a chance to monitor the opeation of the External t-stat. What I found is that the 28 tube front began to get warm to the touch after the temperature gauge hit the 200 degree f mark. I get the feeling those factory guys wanted the oil to heat up enough to burn of the moisture. My car typically runs about 210 in the summer and will move up to 220 if its over 90 outside or if I'm stuck in traffic. I'm running a 3.2 SS, with a 245mm fan [from a 82SC] and a 28 tube cooler.
trot -The temp gauge needs a matching sensor.

Higher octane fuel, cooler heat range plugs and 20/50 oil help a bit if you're not using them already.

Your issue Trotskyite may be:

The oil cooler fan is what i could not help noticing that you have not installed. I can not say enough about the difference made after my fan installation on my 50 row setrab. Before the installation traffic days would send the temperatures passing my 120 degree celsius mark. With the fan I installed now temps do not pass the 8:30 mark which i believe would be 105 celsius=221 far. Let us know your user experience after the install...

Mysterytrain, the sensor was swapped with the gauge. I double checked the temp with a thermometer in the oil tank to make sure the new gauge was accurate. I am hoping the fan will be the final piece of the puzzle. I have waited over two months for a backordered aftermarket fan that is supposed to put out twice the CF of the stock carrera fan. How big of a difference could the weight of the oil really make?

Trotskyite,
How did you notch your bumper? Or did you just replace it w/ a Carrera bumper/valence?

Keeping the temps down Headrage...

consistently is the best thing you can do for your porsche motor. All porsche's should have an adequate cooler (radiator style) with fan. We cannot control weather and traffic, these two are the biggest foes of the engine aside from spirited driving we CAN control. Cooler consistent temps = longer lasting engine.
