Smog failed: Fuel Restrictor? Please Help
My 79 SC failed smog today in boulder, CO:
HC: 107.9 (2500rpm) 197.6 (idle), max is 400.0 CO 2.31 (2500rpm) 2.78 (idle), max is 2.0 I know that I can lean the mixture slightly to bring down the CO and increase the HC to hopefully find a balance, but that is not my big problem. The other reason that I failed is a missing "Fuel Filler Restrictor" which is apparently the spring loaded entry flap for the fuel filler neck. Problem is, my car has never had one of these as far as I know and I can't find the part anywhere in any catalogs for the life of me. Any ideas? Thanks ahead of time.

crustychief, thanks for the picture. My last 4 (VIN) are 1572, so not quite brothers but damn close with the same color and everything. That looks like it is welded in the filler neck, but mine is just empty besides a small tab. I may be able to fabricate something but I would worry about it dropping down into the tank. Has anyone ever heard of this problem before?

Maybe it is this for a replacement. Older american cars did not have the restrictors and had to be updated to meet emissions way back when.... The old leaded gas nozzles where larger in diameter and would not fit in the unleaded vehicles with the restrictor. I hope this helps.

Thanks, it is difficult to tell from the picture but that must be the right part. Ordered already, and of course I used it as an excuse to shrink my project parts list a bit. I'll lean my mixture a bit and for insurance use some of that "Smog Pass" magic formula. Best, Noah.
