Caliper dust boots burnt up!

I recently rebuilt the front and rear calipers, with new rotors and PFC pads.

I then did a couple of DEs....OK 6!

Today I removed the rear caliper and the outer dust boot is falling apart!

It looked like the rubber was turned to charcoal.

Is this normal?!?

Do I need to replace them, or do track cars simply run without the dust boots?

Or do I need high temp parts?

And while we are here is it a good idea to remove the metal dust shield for more cooling?

Thanks!

Yes, your brakes are getting too hot, more cooling or bigger rotors will alleviate the symptom

For a track only car you can leave them off, the down side is more mung into the piston/cylinder + shorter life

Fear not.

Burnt dust seals are the norm for Carreras doing track time. No amount of ducting will resolve this issue. Torched dust boots is not that big an issue. Just plan on rebuilding your calipers every year. (The brake dust will eventually cause the fluid seal to fail.)

... I recall a NASA event where they decided to pull a "red flag" drill. I was one of three 911s in a row. Each with flaming brake calipers. The smoke was rather disconcerting.
